AGaiaData Release 2 catalogue of white dwarfs and a comparison with SDSS [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2018
We present a catalogue of white dwarf candidates selected from the second data release of Gaia (DR2). We used a sample of spectroscopically confirmed white dwarfs from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to map the entire space spanned by these objects ...

Brown Dwarf Companions to White Dwarfs [PDF]

open access: yesAIP Conference Proceedings, 2011
Brown dwarf companions to white dwarfs are rare, but recent infra-red surveys are slowly reveal- ing examples. We present new observations of the post-common envelope binary WD0137-349, which reveals the effects of irradiation on the ~ 0.05M* secondary, and new observations of GD 1400 which show that it too is a close, post-comon envelope system.

Explosion of White Dwarfs [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Astronomical Union Colloquium, 1987
AbstractWe present models for Type I supernova light curves based on the explosion of partially solid white dwarfs in close binary systems. Studies of such explosions show that they leave bound remnants of different size. Our results reproduce quite well the maximun luminosities, the expansion velocities and the shape of the light curve.

On the Measurement of Fundamental Parameters of White Dwarfs in the Gaia Era [PDF]

open access: yesAstrophysical Journal, 2019
We present a critical review of the determination of fundamental parameters of white dwarfs discovered by the Gaia mission. We first reinterpret color–magnitude and color–color diagrams using photometric and spectroscopic information contained in the ...

Core crystallization and pile-up in the cooling sequence of evolving white dwarfs [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 2019
White dwarfs are stellar embers depleted of nuclear energy sources that cool over billions of years1. These stars, which are supported by electron degeneracy pressure, reach densities of 107 grams per cubic centimetre in their cores2.

Magnetism in white Dwarfs [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1971
Searches have been made for the normal and quadratic Zeeman effect and broad-band circular polarization in white dwarf stars. A positive effect has been found in Grw + 70°8247 whose continuum shows both linear and circular polarization.

Analysis of Helium-rich White Dwarfs Polluted by Heavy Elements in the Gaia Era [PDF]

open access: yesAstrophysical Journal, 2019
We present an analysis of 1023 DBZ/DZ(A) and 319 DQ white dwarf stars taken from the Montreal White Dwarf Database. This represents a significant increase over the previous comprehensive studies on these types of objects.

A Cooling Anomaly of High-mass White Dwarfs [PDF]

open access: yesAstrophysical Journal, 2019
Recently, the power of Gaia data has revealed an enhancement of high-mass white dwarfs (WDs) on the Hertzsprung–Russell diagram, called the Q branch.
