ImageBox 2 – Efficient and rapid access of image tiles from whole-slide images using serverless HTTP range requests

open access: yesJournal of Pathology Informatics, 2020
Background: Whole-slide images (WSI) are produced by a high-resolution scanning of pathology glass slides. There are a large number of whole-slide imaging scanners, and the resulting images are frequently larger than 100,000 × 100,000 pixels which ...

Artificial intelligence as a tool for diagnosis in digital pathology whole slide images: A systematic review

open access: yesJournal of Pathology Informatics, 2022
Digital pathology had a recent growth, stimulated by the implementation of digital whole slide images (WSIs) in clinical practice, and the pathology field faces shortage of pathologists in the last few years.

Liver whole slide image analysis for 3D vessel reconstruction [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The emergence of digital pathology has enabled numerous quantitative analyses of histopathology structures. However, most pathology image analyses are limited to two-dimensional datasets, resulting in substantial information loss and incomplete ...

Cytoplasmic p21 promotes stemness of colon cancer cells via activation of the NFκB pathway

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Cytoplasmic p21 promotes colorectal cancer stem cell (CSC) features by destabilizing the NFκB–IκB complex, activating NFκB signaling, and upregulating BCL‐xL and COX2. In contrast to nuclear p21, cytoplasmic p21 enhances spheroid formation and stemness transcription factor CD133.

Whole Slide Image Understanding in Pathology: What Is the Salient Scale of Analysis?

open access: yesBioMedInformatics
Background: In recent years, there has been increasing research in the applications of Artificial Intelligence in the medical industry. Digital pathology has seen great success in introducing the use of technology in the digitisation and analysis of ...

Continuous representation of tumor microvessel density and detection of angiogenic hotspots in histological whole-slide images [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Blood vessels in solid tumors are not randomly distributed, but are clustered in angiogenic hotspots. Tumor microvessel density (MVD) within these hotspots correlates with patient survival and is widely used both in diagnostic routine and in clinical ...

Computational imaging modalities for multi-focal whole-slide imaging systems

open access: yesApplied Optics, 2020
Whole-slide imaging systems can generate full-color image data of tissue slides efficiently, which are needed for digital pathology applications. This paper focuses on a scanner architecture that is based on a multi-line image sensor that is tilted with respect to the optical axis, such that every line of the sensor scans the tissue

Monitoring of circulating tumor DNA allows early detection of disease relapse in patients with operable breast cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Monitoring circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) in patients with operable breast cancer can reveal disease relapse earlier than radiology in a subset of patients. The failure to detect ctDNA in some patients with recurrent disease suggests that ctDNA could serve as a supplement to other monitoring approaches.

LINC01116, a hypoxia‐lncRNA marker of pathological lymphangiogenesis and poor prognosis in lung adenocarcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The LINC01116 long noncoding RNA is induced by hypoxia and associated with poor prognosis and high recurrence rates in two cohorts of lung adenocarcinoma patients. Here, we demonstrate that besides its expression in cancer cells, LINC01116 is markedly expressed in lymphatic endothelial cells of the tumor stroma in which it participates in hypoxia ...
