Pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP) is a rare pulmonary disorder characterized by the accumulation of surfactant in the alveolar spaces resulting in hypoxemic respiratory failure. Whole lung lavage (WLL), the preferred treatment for PAP, physically removes the lipoproteinaceous material from the alveolar spaces.
