Can public-domain datasets be leveraged to identify factors associated with the occurrence of African swine fever in europe?

open access: yesActa Veterinaria Scandinavica
Background African swine fever (ASF) is a highly contagious and deadly viral disease affecting domestic pigs and wild boars. This study uses public domain datasets to identify the association between (a)biotic variables and occurrences of ASF in domestic

Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in wild boars (Sus scrofa) hunted in Ukraine

open access: yesInternational Journal for Parasitology: Parasites and Wildlife
Toxoplasma gondii is an important zoonotic parasite worldwide, but it has received limited attention in Ukraine. A seroepidemiological study was conducted and samples from 452 wild boars that had been hunted in 2006–2011 in 23 of the 25 regions of ...

Melanism in salamanders: effects of insularity, sex and size on dorsal colouration in Salamandra salamandra

open access: yesJournal of Zoology, EarlyView.
In this study we tested the effects of insularity on amphibian colouration using the fire salamander as a model system. Although increased melanism was not a consistent pattern across all islands, salamanders from one island exhibited higher proportions of black pigmentation than mainland populations, while insular populations overall showed reduced ...

Repurposing Bird Bycatch From Camera Traps in Urban Landscapes: A Correlate of Avian and Mammalian Richness?

open access: yesJournal of Zoology, EarlyView.
Here, we evaluated the ecological value of bird detections obtained opportunistically from camera traps by comparing them with standardized point count surveys conducted in 2023–2024, across the metropolitan area of Firenze, central Italy, and explored their potential to indicate broader urban biodiversity patterns through cross‐taxa relationships with

The Wild Boar Attack – A Case Report of a Wild Boar Inflflicted Injury and Treatment

open access: yesCollegium antropologicum, 2014
Croatia is a relatively safe country in regards to wild animal attacks and trauma to humans, even though there are a few reported cases of wild animal attacks on humans almost every year. As a bio-diversity hot-spot it is inhabited by a few wild animal species that are known to attack humans and cause serious, sometimes even fatal injuries to humans ...

Occurrence and distribution of sarcoptic mange in wild Neotropical canids

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, EarlyView.
Sarcoptic mange affects most Neotropical canid species across multiple countries. It represents a widespread yet largely overlooked conservation threat with potential for cross‐species transmission. Coordinated monitoring and management efforts are needed to understand and mitigate its impacts. Abstract Sarcoptic mange, a contagious skin disease caused

Geographical distribution of Hyalomma marginatum Koch, 1844 in northwestern Spain from 2019 to 2024: A one health approach

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, EarlyView.
This study confirms the presence of the tick Hyalomma marginatum Koch, 1844, a known vector of the Crimean‐Congo hemorrhagic fever virus at Galicia. Most ticks were encountered on humans and livestock, with numbers rising between 2019 and 2024, especially during spring and in warm‐summer Mediterranean southwest areas of the studied region.

Integrating natural baselines into ecosystem restoration: scaling herbivore targets for European landscapes

open access: yesRestoration Ecology, EarlyView.
Abstract Introduction Herbivore‐mediated ecosystem processes are fundamental to biodiversity, yet have been greatly diminished by megafauna extinctions and replacement of wild herbivores by managed livestock. With increasing restoration ambitions—including the United Nations' (UN) Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and the European Union (EU) Nature ...

Soil inoculation enhances early‐phase reintroduction success in two rare plant species

open access: yesRestoration Ecology, EarlyView.
Abstract Introduction Reintroduction for conservation is an important measure to restore populations of vulnerable plant species. However, reintroduction success rates are relatively low. Inoculating reintroduced plants with facilitative microorganisms from native populations may enhance their performance.
