Social information about others' affective states in a human‐altered world

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, Volume 95, Issue 8, Page 1311-1325, August 2026.
Faced with anthropogenic change, animals now encounter challenges different from their evolutionary past. To cope with such challenges, animals may use social information about others' affective states to guide their decisions. Considering affective states of wild animals could have important implications for animal welfare and wildlife conservation ...

Acorn caching hotspots of the Eurasian jay in pine plantations: Ecological basis for understorey management to assist oak regeneration

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 8, August 2026.
Our findings show that Eurasian jay dispersal activity depends on specific understorey structures when selecting caching microsites—particularly shrub cover and standing pines. These features could be directly shaped by management to promote assisted natural oak regeneration.

SANE: An index of anthropogenic noise levels for wildlife research in terrestrial ecosystems

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 17, Issue 8, Page 2464-2476, August 2026.
Abstract Understanding the impact of noise pollution on wildlife is challenging due to the complexity of isolating the anthropogenic components from the soundscape. Soundscape studies usually employ acoustic indices that apply thresholds to isolate anthrophony from natural sounds. However, natural and anthropogenic sounds do not always conform to these

Host plant use is driven by microclimate not nutritional quality in a grassland butterfly

open access: yesEcological Entomology, Volume 51, Issue 4, Page 690-702, August 2026.
Small Copper butterflies (Lycaena phlaeas) choose to lay eggs on host plants growing in warmer microclimates, despite lower nitrogen content. Bare ground created by European Moles increases host plant temperatures and weakens the negative relationship between nitrogen content and microclimatic warmth.

Two Secondary Introductions From a Shared Bridgehead Population Show Evidence of Divergent and Parallel Selection

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 35, Issue 15, August 2026.
ABSTRACT Biological invasions offer large‐scale experiments for examining rapid evolution and testing the predictability of adaptive change. Assessing the repeatability of such adaptive responses, however, requires replicated introductions that share similar demographic and environmental contexts. Single introduction events are common during biological
