Wild Carnivore Survey of Echinococcus Species in Slovenia

open access: yesAnimals, 2022
Wild carnivores are definitive hosts and potential reservoirs for the tapeworm Echinococcus sp. which can cause cystic and alveolar echinococcosis. Both are considered neglected and important food-borne pandemics. This study is the first to molecularly test Slovenian wild carnivores for Echinococcus species that can cause disease in humans.

The positive experience of encountering wolves in the wild

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, 2020
Large carnivores often impact human livelihoods and well‐being. Previous research has mostly focused on the negative impacts of large carnivores on human well‐being but has rarely considered the positive aspects of living with large carnivores.

Media Framing of Financial Mechanisms for Resolving Human–Predator Conflict in Namibia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The decline in carnivore populations is largely exacerbated by lethal methods used to reduce livestock depredation. Financial mechanisms are designed to limit lethal control by reducing the cost of depredation. The media can affect how the general public

This paper presents a synopsis of the current status and distribution of the African wild dog Lycaon pictus, outlines reasons for its decline and discusses recommendations to halt or reverse this decline. A recent review of the status of the species provides evidence that it has disappeared or is in decline throughout its range (sub-Saharan Africa ...

Do carnivore surveys match reports of carnivore presence by pastoralists? A case of the eastern Serengeti ecosystem

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Conservation, 2020
Human-carnivore encounters are common where humans and wild carnivores share the same landscape. The frequency of such encounters gives insight regarding carnivore density and might correlate with human-carnivore conflict incidences.

Ecological thresholds and large carnivores conservation: Implications for the Amur tiger and leopard in China [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
The ecological threshold concept describes how changes in one or more factors at thresholds can result in a large shift in the state of an ecosystem. This concept focuses attention on limiting factors that affect the tolerance of systems or organisms and
