Investigating the relationship between stakeholder opinion about wildfire management and landscape context using GIS [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Colorado residents living in the wildland urban interface (WUI) were asked about their perception of wildfire risk and their willingness-to-pay (WTP) for three fire management procedures: fuel reduction by thinning, fire suppression and prescribed fires.

Burn Severity as a Driver of Multi‐Year Increases in Gross Primary Production and Solar‐Induced Fluorescence Following a Wildfire in Arctic Tundra

open access: yesAGU Advances, Volume 7, Issue 6, September 2026.
Abstract While climate‐driven increases in wildfires are altering the composition and function of Arctic ecosystems, the impact of burn severity on longer‐term changes in community composition and ecosystem fluxes remains less understood, creating uncertainty in estimates of the biome's carbon storage capacity.

Contribution of La‐Niña‐Like Pacific Ocean Trend in Sea‐Surface Temperatures to Western United States Wildfire Area, 1984–2022

open access: yesEarth's Future, Volume 14, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract In the western United States (US), the annual wildfire extent increased by 306% over 1984–2022, largely due to a 1,320% increase in forest‐fire area. During this time, associated with the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), the tropical Pacific Ocean exhibited a “La‐Niña‐like” trend with an enhanced zonal sea‐surface temperature gradient (gSST)

Inside the Fire Plume Chemical Interactions: A Review on Key Processes and Future Directions

open access: yesReviews of Geophysics, Volume 64, Issue 3, September 2026.
Abstract Fire plumes are rising columns of heated air masses, consisting of gaseous and particulate matter generated by combustion, affecting air quality, climate and public health. The chemical species released undergo secondary reactions and participate in chemical and physical interactions, altering the properties of the fire plume.

Forest Floor Protection: The Critical Defense Against Post‐Harvest Soil Carbon Loss

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Biogeosciences, Volume 131, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Understanding the dynamics of soil carbon accumulation and loss following forest harvest is crucial for sustainable forest operations in western Canada. However, the region's diverse climates and forest types complicate broad generalizations regarding disturbance impacts. We synthesized 20 years of soil carbon stock (SCS) data from the British

Wildlife border passages in contested transboundary landscapes—Mitigating barriers in Białowieża Forest World Heritage Site

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 9, September 2026.
While border infrastructure disrupts wildlife movement, conservation interventions need not hinge on resolving the broader conflicts that created these barriers. Instead, targeted measures—including wildlife passages through existing barriers, improved landscape permeability at rivers and less hazardous security technologies—can help mitigate ...

Using extreme value analysis to enhance defendable space for fire fighters and residents

open access: yes, 2012
While wildland fires (bushfires) are an anticipated event with each fire season, it is important that the extent of likely annual fire weather conditions and those of more extreme conditions are identified as part of community preparations for fire ...

Influence of Terrain Slope on Sub-Surface Fire Behavior in Boreal Forests of China

open access: yesFire
In recent years, the influence of extreme weather patterns has led to an alarming increase in the frequency and severity of sub-surface forest fires in boreal forests.

Potential COVID-19 Outbreak in Fire Camp: Modeling Scenarios and Interventions

open access: yesFire, 2020
The global COVID-19 pandemic will pose unique challenges to the management of wildland fire in 2020. Fire camps may provide an ideal setting for the transmission of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.
