The wind channel and the whirling arm have been devised and perfected over a period of a number of years with a view to providing reliable aerodynamic data for aircraft designers. Of late years the wind channel has been used considerably more than the whirling arm.In the two pieces of apparatus distinct methods are used.

The Eiffel Tower was built for the Paris Exposition of 1889. By 1903, Gustave Eiffel had become interested in the new subject of aerodynamics. In that year, he rigged up a cable from the second floor of the tower to the ground. Test objects could be dropped along the cable, and their reaction to wind resistance could be measured.

Contraction Cone for a Wind Tunnel
Journal of the Aeronautical Sciences, 1943HSTJE-SHEN TSIEN 1 has given a method for designing x i —. e(/') ^ ^ contraction cones for wind tunnels. This is t a n ^ ~ = ^ i e-^x/a) = 1 + 2 / j(— l) e quite accuiate theoretically but requires complicated m=l numerical calculations. A different solution is given f or 0 < ^ < oo below.

An environmental wind tunnel for producing air flow over an automotive vehicle includes a source of air under pressure and an elongated housing for receiving an automotive vehicle. The environmental wind tunnel has an upstream end coupled to the downstream end of the source of air under pressure, so that air is blown axially through the housing from ...

Wind Tunnels: Design Considerations in Wind Tunnel Testing of Cyclists
2019This chapter describes and summarizes design considerations required to develop an accurate and repeatable wind tunnel-based testing program to measure and optimize the aerodynamic drag of athletes, their apparel, and competition equipment. The chapter focuses on drag measurement techniques for the sport of road cycling with the intent that similar ...
