Diurnal Evolution of the Wintertime Boundary Layer in Urban Beijing, China: Insights from Doppler Lidar and a 325-m Meteorological Tower

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2020
The diurnal evolution of the atmospheric boundary layer—the lowermost part of the atmosphere where the majority of human activity and meteorological phenomena take place—is described by its depth.

Synthetic wind climatologies

open access: yesMeteorologische Zeitschrift, 1994
A strategy was developed to calculate the unknown forcing for the simulation of climatological wind roses with meso- and microscale models. It was applied to an area with heavy orographically structured terrain.

Future changes in Antarctic near-surface winds: regional variability and key drivers under a high-emission scenario [PDF]

open access: yesThe Cryosphere
Antarctic near-surface winds play a key role in shaping the local climate of Antarctica. For instance, they trigger drifting snow and reduce the amount of precipitation reaching the ground.

Sensitivity studies of the E region neutral response to the postmidnight diffuse aurora [PDF]

open access: yesAnnales Geophysicae, 2006
Measurements of the neutral thermosphere within the postmidnight substorm recovery phase diffuse aurora show very large horizontal winds, and strong vertical structure.

Deep-Reaching Global Ocean Overturning Circulation Generated by Surface Buoyancy Forcing

open access: yesTellus: Series A, Dynamic Meteorology and Oceanography, 2023
In contrast with the atmosphere, which is heated from below by solar radiation, the ocean is both heated and cooled from above. To drive a deep-reaching overturning circulation in this context, it is generally assumed that either intense interior mixing ...

Dominant Forcing Regions of Decadal Variations in the Kuroshio Extension Revealed by a Linear Rossby Wave Model

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2023
The Kuroshio Extension (KE) is known to undergo large decadal variations, especially after the 1976/77 climate regime shift. Due to strong ocean‐atmosphere interactions over the KE, the region may be a key region for basin‐scale Pacific decadal climate ...

Input Sensitivity and Simulation Accuracy of WindNinja Wind Field Simulations in Complex Plateau Mountainous Terrain

open access: yesFire
Near-surface wind field simulation in complex mountainous terrain is essential for predicting wildfire behavior and supporting fire risk management. WindNinja, a widely used diagnostic wind downscaling model, is strongly dependent on its initial input ...

Wave fluxes of equatorial Kelvin waves and QBO zonal wind forcing derived from SABER and ECMWF temperature space-time spectra [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2009
The quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) of the zonal mean zonal wind is a dynamical phenomenon of the tropical middle atmosphere. Influences of the QBO can even be found at mid and high latitudes.

Strong Wind‐Driven Oceanic Forcing on Decadal SST Variability Over the Global Ocean

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Gu et al. (2024, https://doi.org/10.1029/2023GL107401) recently provided the first quantitative assessment of oceanic and atmospheric forcing on decadal sea surface temperature (SST) variability globally in observations.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.
