Modelling the aerodynamics of vertical-axis wind turbines in unsteady wind conditions

open access: yes, 2013
Most numerical and experimental studies of the performance of vertical-axis wind turbines have been conducted with the rotors in steady, and thus somewhat artificial, wind conditions - with the result that turbine aerodynamics, under varying wind ...

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Response of 5 MW Floating Wind Turbines to Combined Action of Wind and Rain

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2022
For 5 MW floating wind turbines, the load response is significantly affected by wind and rain conditions. In order to reveal the relevant regularity of windblown rain and analyze the load response after being affected by the wind and rain, the rain phase

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Short-term fatigue analysis for tower base of a spar-type wind turbine under stochastic wind-wave loads

open access: yesInternational Journal of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, 2018
Due to integrated stochastic wind and wave loads, the supporting platform of a Floating Offshore Wind Turbine (FOWT) has to bear six Degrees of Freedom (DOF) motion, which makes the random cyclic loads acting on the structural components, for instance ...

Loads assessment of a fixed‐bottom offshore wind farm with wake steering

open access: yesWind Energy, 2022
Wake steering via deliberate yaw offset is an emerging wind farm control technique that has the potential to mitigate wake losses and further increase wind farm energy yield.

Septin 9 PB domains coordinate centrosome positioning and microtubule acetylation to control epithelial polarity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Septin 9 polybasic domains couple phosphoinositide‐rich membrane binding to centrosome positioning, Golgi organization, and microtubule acetylation to control epithelial polarity. Their loss disrupts this axis, causing centrosome mispositioning, Golgi fragmentation, reduced microtubule acetylation, and polarity inversion via upregulation of the ...

Coupling Vibration Characteristics and Wind-Induced Responses of Large-Span Transmission Lines Under Multi-Dimensional Wind

open access: yesBuildings
Transmission lines, crucial for power and urban infrastructure, are vulnerable to wind damage; this paper addresses research gaps in tower-line systems under multi-dimensional wind loads and aerodynamic damping.

Wind loading

open access: yesBulletin of the New Zealand Society for Earthquake Engineering, 1976
This paper is presented to outline the features of the revised Wind Loading Code NZS4203/303 and to give some background on the history of wind ByLaws in New Zealand.

Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.
