Sea and Wind: Multivariate Extremes at Work

Extremes, 1998
This article is devoted to the multivariate extreme value theory which is used to estimate the probability of failure of a sea-wall near the town of Petten in North Holland, Netherlands. The failure region has been obtained by coastal engineers and depends on the structure of the dike and the adjoining part of the sea bottom.

Wind over the sea

2010
This is a book about satellite oceanography and so this chapter about satellite-based measurements of wind and phenomena related to the wind does not attempt to address the topic from the meteorologist’s point of view. For that there are texts devoted to satellite meteorology (e.g., Kidder and Vonder Haar, 1995).

Sea state and wind speed

2020
Monitoring of sea state and sea surface wind is certainly of fundamental importance for studies on climatology, meteorology, weather forecast, and ocean circulation. However, it has a great relevance also in the framework of maritime surveillance, particularly for navigation safety.

Winding down to the sea

1985
Rivers are channelized flows of water which drain from the continents the precipitation falling as rain or snow, together with the dissolved and entrained particulate products of rock weathering. Today rivers carry annually to the oceans and seas approximately 14 km3 of weathered material, a substantial proportion of it in solution.

The Stress of Light Winds on the Sea

Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, 1957
Values of the stress of light winds on the sea put forward by Neumann [11] are questioned. They are inconsistent with other data and with some new observations of wind profiles made over the open sea.

Sea Fog under the North Wind with the Influence of Foehn Wind in the Okhotsk Sea

The Okhotsk Sea is renowned as one of the world's most foggy regions. Previous studies have identified that sea fog occurring under south winds is mainly advection fog. However, the formation mechanism of sea fog under north winds remains unclear. On August 21, 2019, the research vessel "Xiangyanghong 01" observed a ...

Wind Effects in the North Sea

Journal of Physical Oceanography, 1980
Abstract Observed wind-induced fluxes in the Norwegian Trench and on the shallower North Sea Plateau are strongly coupled insofar as variations in one are associated with corresponding but opposing variations in the other. A simple mathematical model indicates that this coupling is topographically controlled.

Wind-induced Currents in Seas

Water Resources, 2001
Analysis of currents in the Caspian and Black seas is made to show that the role of wind-induced currents in the dynamics of seas is largely overestimated and the conventional methods used to evaluate current velocities based on wind speed yield values higher than those observed in the field.
