Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

"How much is enough?" Determining adequate levels of environmental compensation for wind power impacts using equivalency analysis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Environmental considerations at wind power developments require avoidance and mitigation of environmental impacts through proper citing, operational constraints, etc.

Occurrence of Kelvin-Helmholtz Billows in Sea-breeze Circulations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Centred at the interface between the sea-breeze and the return flow aloft, Kelvin-Helmholtz billows (KHB) are an important feature of the turbulent structure of some sea-breeze circulations (SBCs).

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Analysis of the Global Swell and Wind Sea Energy Distribution Using WAVEWATCH III

open access: yesAdvances in Meteorology, 2016
Over the past several decades, an increasing number of studies have focused on the global view of swell and wind sea climate. However, our understanding of wind sea and swell is still incomplete as is the lack of an integrated description for all the ...

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Identification and analysis of interactions between sea use functions [PDF]

open access: yes
This report focuses on the interactions both positive and negative between offshore wind energy and the non-wind sea use functions. Some sea use functions can co-exist without substantial negative effects.

Coupled ocean–atmosphere interactions between the Madden–Julian oscillation and synoptic-scale variability over the warm pool [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
A principal component analysis of the combined fields of sea surface temperature (SST) and surface zonal and meridional wind reveals the dominant mode of intraseasonal (30-70-day) co-variability during northern winter in the tropical Eastern Hemisphere ...

Separating swell from mixed waves around island through wave action balance modeling

open access: yesApplied Ocean Research
Wind seas and swells typically co-occur around islands, resulting in a wave spectrum with a frequency characterized by double or multiple peaks. Separating the wave energies of wind seas and swells is crucial for accurately estimating the wave loads ...
