Testing of the FolksWind 1.5kW vertical axis wind turbine

open access: yes, 2011
In recent years the small wind industry has shown exponential growth; however there have been growing concerns over the safety and reliability of small wind turbines on the market. The International Electrotechnical Committee and the International Energy

Workflow for Design of Experiments‐Based Modeling of Species Transport and Growth Kinetics in GaN Hydride Vapor Phase Epitaxy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A novel workflow for investigating hydride vapor phase epitaxy for GaN bulk crystal growth is proposed. It combines Design of experiments (DoE) with physical simulations of mass transport and crystal growth kinetics, serving as an intermediate step between DoE and experiments.

Examination of Surface Wind Asymmetry in Tropical Cyclones over the Northwest Pacific Ocean Using SMAP Observations

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2019
Tropical cyclone (TC) surface wind asymmetry is investigated by using wind data acquired from an L-band passive microwave radiometer onboard the NASA Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) satellite between 2015 and 2017 over the Northwest Pacific (NWP ...

Modelling the aerodynamic response of a wind turbine blade passing in front of the tower

open access: yes, 2008
It is recognised that even upwind turbines feel the presence of the supporting tower in a pulse of the output known as 3p oscillations. Here we investigate the aerodynamics of this phenomenon by modelling the upwind perturbation of the free wind through ...

Soft Mechanical‐Electrical Logic Using Liquid Metal‐Filled 3D‐Printed Architectures

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
We present 3D‐printed soft mechanical–electrical logic elements that use liquid metal–filled silicone tubes actuated by thermoplastic polyurethane/polylactic acid (TPU/PLA) architectures to produce Boolean operations. Complementary normally open and normally closed unit cells perform repeatable binary transitions and can be combined into more complex ...

Assessment of Wind Shear Severity in Airport Runway Vicinity using Interpretable TabNet approach and Doppler LiDAR Data

open access: yesApplied Artificial Intelligence
Severe wind shear events near airport runways pose serious safety risks and are a growing concern in civil aviation. Identification of severe wind shear risk factors may enhance aviation safety.

Periodicity of the average wind shear

open access: yesProceedings of the Estonian Academy of Sciences. Engineering, 2007
Higher level wind speeds are traditionally predicted either on the basis of the widely used logarithmic equation or using the Hellmann equation. In both equations, a coefficient that assesses the average wind shear curvature is usually used. This coefficient has been considered to be a constant, depending on the roughness of the surrounding landscape.

Direct Metal Deposition of Graphene–Ti28Nb35.4Zr Matrix Composites With Enhanced Mechanical, Corrosion, and Biocompatibility Properties for Bone Implants

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Graphene nanoplatelet (0.1 wt.%) reinforcement significantly enhances the performance of β Ti‐28Nb‐35.4Zr alloy. Grain refinement, reduced water contact angle, and improved surface characteristics promote osteoblast adhesion and complete surface coverage after 7 days.

Study on Characteristics and Numerical Simulation of a Convective Low-Level Wind Shear Event at Xining Airport

open access: yesAtmosphere
Low-level wind shear (LLWS) is a critical issue in aviation meteorology, posing serious risks to flight safety—especially at plateau airports with high elevation and complex terrain. This study investigates a convective wind shear event at Xining Airport
