A spatially optimized wind tunnel [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2017
In this report a wind tunnel is described in term of its design, its construction as well as in its validation of flow features. This wind tunnel is characterized by a new unconventional design. The innovative design allows an unusual long flow test section (in particular important for turbulence research) relative to the total size of the wind tunnel.

Field measurements reveal insights into the impact of turbulent wind on loads experienced by parabolic trough solar collectors [PDF]

open access: yes
To ensure efficient and reliable operation of a concentrating solar-thermal power (CSP) plant, its solar collector field needs to accurately focus sunlight. The optical efficiency and structural integrity of the solar collectors is significantly influenced by wind conditions in the field.

Investigation of wind pressures on tall building under interference effects using machine learning techniques [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
Interference effects of tall buildings have attracted numerous studies due to the boom of clusters of tall buildings in megacities. To fully understand the interference effects of buildings, it often requires a substantial amount of wind tunnel tests.

Establishment and application of a digital twin for vortex-induced vibration of a bridge deck section

open access: yesEngineering Applications of Computational Fluid Mechanics
Wind tunnel tests or computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of the aeroelastic model of a bridge deck section are currently used to make sure that significant vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of a long-span bridge will not occur after the bridge is

Research on Free-flight Validation Test of Stall Characteristics for Commuter Category Airplanes

open access: yesHangkong gongcheng jinzhan, 2020
It is found that the rolling characteristic after airplane stall is rapidly changed, when the wind tunnel test prediction is conducted for the small commuter category airplanes.

Wind Energy and the Turbulent Nature of the Atmospheric Boundary Layer [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Wind turbines operate in the atmospheric boundary layer, where they are exposed to the turbulent atmospheric flows. As the response time of wind turbine is typically in the range of seconds, they are affected by the small scale intermittent properties of the turbulent wind.

Towards the Design of Aerostat Wind Turbine Arrays through AI [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
A new form of aerostat wind generation system which contains an array of interacting turbines is proposed. The design of the balloon turbine components is undertaken through the combination of artificial intelligence and rapid prototyping techniques such that the need for highly accurate models/simulations of the lift and wake dynamics is removed ...

Comparison of Lifetime-Based Pressure-Sensitive Paint Measurements in a Wind Tunnel Using Model Pitch–Traverse and Pitch–Pause Modes

open access: yesPhotonics
In order to improve the data productivity of a wind tunnel test, the model under investigation in the wind tunnel is moved continuously with a predetermined constant angular speed in the so-called pitch–traverse mode. Alternatively, the wind tunnel model

Predicting wind pressures around circular cylinders using machine learning techniques [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
Numerous studies have been carried out to measure wind pressures around circular cylinders since the early 20th century due to its engineering significance. Consequently, a large amount of wind pressure data sets have accumulated, which presents an excellent opportunity for using machine learning (ML) techniques to train models to predict wind ...
