Wind turbine wake aerodynamics

Progress in Aerospace Sciences, 2003
Abstract The aerodynamics of horizontal axis wind turbine wakes is studied. The contents is directed towards the physics of power extraction by wind turbines and reviews both the near and the far wake region. For the near wake, the survey is restricted to uniform, steady and parallel flow conditions, thereby excluding wind shear, wind speed and rotor

Wind turbine wakes over hills

Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 2018
Understanding and predicting the behaviour of wind turbine wake flows over hills is important for optimal design of wind-farm configurations on topography. In this study, we present an analytical modelling framework together with large-eddy simulation (LES) results to investigate turbine wakes over two-dimensional hills.

Met Mast Measurements of Wind Turbine Wakes

2021
This chapter addresses met mast measurements for wind turbine wake research, where we tackle the matter by posing and answering three questions. By asking ourselves what the value is of met mast measurements for wake/aerodynamic research, we describe how met masts can be and have been used in aerodynamic research, accompanied by a number of ...

Numerical Modeling of Wind Turbine Wakes

Journal of Fluids Engineering, 2002
An aerodynamical model for studying three-dimensional flow fields about wind turbine rotors is presented. The developed algorithm combines a three-dimensional Navier-Stokes solver with a so-called actuator line technique in which the loading is distributed along lines representing the blade forces.

Turbulence characteristics in wind-turbine wakes

Journal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics, 1996
Abstract An analysis of the evolution of turbulence characteristics in wind-turbine wakes has been carried out. Based on experimental results and on numerical results obtained with a CFD code, complemented with some theoretical considerations, simple analytical expressions are proposed for the estimation of the turbulent kinetic energy, k, and its ...

Meteorological Controls on Wind Turbine Wakes

Proceedings of the IEEE, 2013
The primary control on the magnitude of the power losses induced by wind turbine wakes in large wind farms is the hub-height wind speed via its link to the turbine thrust coefficient. Hence, at low to moderate wind speeds (between cut-in and rated turbine wind speeds) when the thrust coefficient is high, wake losses are proportionally larger and ...

Turbulent Wind Turbine Wakes in a Wind Farm

2012
A model of flow in a cluster of wind turbines has been developed. The model predicts average and standard deviation of wind speed in a wind farm as function of ambient wind speed, wind direction and turbulence intensity. In this paper the sub-models for velocity deficit and added turbulence of a single wind turbine are presented.
