Wake Study Methods of Wind Turbines

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2011
Two different methods for determination of the aerodynamic performance of horizontal axis wind turbines (HAWT) are proposed in this paper. The methods presented have various levels of complexity to calculate the aerodynamic performances of HAWT, starting with a simple method, the lifting line method, and ending with a CFD approach.

Wake Measurements Around Operating Wind Turbines

Journal of Solar Energy Engineering, 1985
Researchers at Oregon State University have conducted wind measurement programs to describe the wake behind large horizontal axis turbines at Goodnoe Hills, Washington, (MOD-2), and behind the FloWind vertical axis wind turbine near Ellenburg, Washington.

Near-wake behaviour of wind turbines

Journal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics, 1999
If wind turbines are to be large contributors to energy production, a large amount of turbines have to be erected. As the areas suitable for wind energy production are limited, an optimum use of these areas are needed.

Three-dimensional free wake calculation of wind turbine wakes

Journal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics, 1988
Abstract A numerical method has been developed for the computation of wake structure and development of horizontal axis wind turbines. The method uses the vortex particle concept which already has been used in order to compute three-dimensional unsteady inviscid flows around wings and helicopter rotors.

Wind Tunnel Investigation on Wake Effects of a Wind Turbine

2009
The flow field in the wake of a an horizontal axis wind turbine was studied through wind tunnel tests at the Mechanical Department of the Politecnico di Milano. Aim of the research is to measure the wind flow in different points in the wake in order to characterize the flow blowing on structures that are positioned downwind a wind turbine and ...

Aerodynamics of wind turbine wakes

2009
This report reviews the available literature on the aerodynamics of wind turbines and wind farms. Firstly, two introductory chapters are devoted to the physics of the flow around a wind turbine and the existing engineering models for blade and wake aerodynamics. The focus of this work is however on the numerical modeling of wakes.
