Influence of Technological and Environmental Factors on the Major Ion Composition in Cooling Water Discharges of a Nuclear Power Plant

open access: yesEnergy Science &Engineering, EarlyView.
Statistical modelling and grey water footprint analysis revealed how technological and environmental factors shape the major ion composition of cooling water discharges from a nuclear power plant. Findings highlight that while ion concentrations increase post‐discharge, they remain within regulatory limits, ensuring minimal ecological impact.

Prediction of windage power loss in alternators [PDF]

open access: yes, 1971
Simplified equations and constants, based on laminar and turbulent flow theory between parallel plates, estimate windage loss in rotating electrical machinery.

Computational fluid dynamics modelling of an entire synchronous generator for improved thermal management [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
This study is the first in a series dedicated to investigating the airflow and thermal management of electrical machines. Owing to the temperature dependent resistive losses in the machine's windings, any improvement in cooling provides a direct ...

Impact of Tidal Forcing on Surface Particle Transport Properties: Insights From Twin Ocean Simulations

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, Volume 18, Issue 2, February 2026.
Abstract Understanding the transport pathways of floating material at the ocean surface is important to improve our knowledge on surface circulation and assessing its environmental impacts. Numerical experiments through Lagrangian particle simulations are widely used to investigate the dispersion of floating material, typically relying on velocity ...

Investigations of the Windage Losses of a High-Speed Shrouded Gear via the Lattice Boltzmann Method

open access: yesApplied Sciences
To suppress the adverse effect of the gear windage phenomenon in the high-speed aeronautic industry, a shroud as an effective alternative strategy is usually to enclose gears to reduce the windage behaviors of high-speed gears. To deeply understand these

Experimental and Numerical Study of Windage Losses in the Narrow Gap Region of a High-Speed Electric Motor

open access: yesFluids, 2018
Windage (drag) losses have been found to be a key design factor for high power density and high-speed electric motor development. Inducing axial flow between rotor and stator is a common method in cooling the rotor.

Surfing Transport of Buoyant Objects Observed in the Nearshore

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, Volume 131, Issue 1, January 2026.
Abstract Free‐drifting buoyant objects, including plastics, marine debris, and organisms, move with the wind, waves, and surface currents. These objects also surf on breaking waves; this process adds to the total transport of the objects and can control beaching.

Windage sources in smooth-walled rotating disc systems [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part C: Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science, 2009
This article presents experimental data and an associated correlation for the windage resulting from a disc rotating in air, characteristic of gas turbine engines and relevant to some electrical machine applications. A test rig has been developed that uses an electric motor to drive a smooth bladeless rotor inside an enclosed pressurized housing.

Three-dimensional tracking solar energy concentrator and method for making same [PDF]

open access: yes, 1977
A three dimensional tracking solar energy concentrator, consisting of a stretched aluminized polymeric membrane supported by a hoop, was presented. The system is sturdy enough to withstand expected windage forces and precipitation.
