Innovative Blade‐Structured Rotor Design for Enhanced Self‐Cooling in Permanent Magnet Machines

open access: yesIET Electric Power Applications, Volume 19, Issue 1, January/December 2025.
This paper proposes a novel self‐cooling solution for surface‐mounted permanent magnet machines using a blade‐structured rotor that draws cooling air through the machine during operation. The design effectively removes heat from critical components, such as end‐windings and magnets, without additional fans or wafters.

Global distribution and cleanup opportunities for macro ocean litter: a quarter century of accumulation dynamics under windage effects

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Letters, 2020
Ocean litter is of growing global concern, and its impacts on marine environments and ecosystems are expected to increase further this century. From a management perspective, natural drifting of macro ocean litter to or near the coast may have a ...

Effect of geometry and operating conditions on spur gear system power loss [PDF]

open access: yes
The results of an analysis of the effects of spur gear size, pitch, width, and ratio on total mesh power loss for a wide range of speeds, torques, and oil viscosities are presented. The analysis uses simple algebraic expressions to determine gear sliding,

An experimental investigation of a self-vacuuming action of a gear pair for the purpose of reducing windage loss (Interior vacuum level, power losses, and temperature rise)

open access: yesNihon Kikai Gakkai ronbunshu, 2015
Windage loss may become more than 10% of all losses when large sized gearing runs fast. In order to reduce the windage loss, it needs to vacuum a gear box because it is proportional to the density of ambient air. The study proposes a helical gearing unit

Inertia-induced accumulation of flotsam in the subtropical gyres

open access: yes, 2016
Recent surveys of marine plastic debris density have revealed high levels in the center of the subtropical gyres. Earlier studies have argued that the formation of great garbage patches is due to Ekman convergence in such regions.

Cold-air performance of a tip turbine designed to drive a lift fan. 3: Effect of simulated fan leakage on turbine performance [PDF]

open access: yes
Performance data were obtained experimentally for a 0.4 linear scale version of the LF460 lift fan turbine for a range of scroll inlet total to diffuser exit static pressure ratios at design equivalent speed with simulated fan leakage air.

Comparison of spur gear efficiency prediction methods [PDF]

open access: yes
The predictions of five spur-gear efficiency calculation methods were compared with three sets of test data using different gear geometries. The data and the analysis methods were limited to jet lubricated, ground, spur gears. The data covered a range in

Stator and rotor vent modelling in a MVA rated synchronous machine [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
An investigation into the solution dependence of a conjugate heat transfer computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of a synchronous generator, with respect to meshing, has been carried out.

The Use of Gas Dynamics to Estimate the Influence of Flanges on Gear Windage Power Loss

open access: yesDynamics
This study aims to develop a new model for windage losses, building upon existing formulation, complemented by dedicated experimental campaigns and a specific methodology designed to isolate and quantify windage losses.
