Experimental and simulation analysis on windage power loss of herringbone gear pair

Journal of tribology, 2023
This paper presents a novel windage power loss (WPL) measurement method for the meshing herringbone gear pair. Firstly, the WPL test rig of herringbone gear pair is put up, and then the measurement sequence of WPL is described; Secondly, the WPL of ...

Novel Calculation Method for Windage Power Loss of Double-helical Gear Transmission

Journal of Fluids Engineering, 2023
This paper presents a novel fast calculation method for windage power loss (WPL) of the meshing double-helical gear pair. Firstly, based on the basic equations of fluid mechanics and computational fluid dynamics simulation method, the calculation ...

Windage power loss reductions in high-speed gear pairs

Forschung im Ingenieurwesen, 2019
This paper deals with recent experimental and numerical research in the possible reduction of windage power losses (WPL). It is accepted that these load-independent losses become prominent over other sources in mechanical transmissions with peripheral speeds above 100 m/s as is the case in energy production, aeronautics and electric vehicles.

Windage Loss and Torque Ripple Reduction in Stator-Permanent Magnet Flux-Switching Machines Using Quasi-Cylindrical Function Contour Rotor

IEEE transactions on industry applications
This paper proposes a quasi-cylindrical function contour rotor to reduce the windage loss and torque ripple (cogging torque) of stator-permanent magnet flux-switching (SPM-FS) machines, where the rotor tooth top contour conforms to the function y = ax2 ...

An Analysis Model for Predicting Windage Power Loss of Aviation Spiral Bevel Gears Under Optimal Injection Jet Layout

Tribology Transactions, 2023
With the increasing rotating speed of aviation spiral bevel gears, the load-independent windage power loss caused by hydrodynamic behavior has a greater impact on transmission efficiency.

Windage Loss in Larger High-Speed Gears

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part A: Power and Process Engineering, 1984
Some preliminary measurements have been made of the windage loss in a number of larger spur gears and one helical gear, in air, and of how this windage loss is affected by speed, size, details of the gear geometry and the shape of enclosures. It is shown that for most gears the larger part of the windage loss arises from the teeth.

On windage losses in high-speed pinion-gear pairs

Mechanism and Machine Theory, 2019
Abstract This article deals with the Windage Power Losses (WPL) of pinion-gear pairs rotating in air. The WPL of several disks, spur and helical gears have been measured using a dedicated test rig developed from a WPL measurement system initially used for one single pinion or disk.

Experimental Investigation of Windage Loss Impacts on Electrical Machine with Oil Jet Cooling

International Conference on Electrical Machines and Systems
Oil-jet cooling is reported to be particularly effective for electrical machines, where oil is directly sprayed onto critical components, such as the stator or rotor.

Reducing Gear Windage Losses From High Speed Gears

Volume 6: 8th International Power Transmission and Gearing Conference, 2000
Abstract Windage losses in gearboxes account for a large portion of the total power loss in high-speed drive trains. Very little actual data has been collected specifically quantifying these losses. Traditional techniques to measure the effects of baffles in high speed gearing applications have been done by trial and error on very ...

Experimental and Computational Assessment of Windage Losses in Rotating Machinery

Journal of Fluids Engineering, 1996
A combined experimental and computational investigation of the flow between a rotating cylinder and a fixed enclosure is presented. The configuration considered is related to the design of a centrifugal desalinator, and includes the flow in the annular as well as in the axial gap regions. The computed flowfield shows significant variations in the axial
