Windage and Axial Friction Losses of High Speed Generator
2003 International Joint Power Generation Conference, 2003Air-cooled generators have been fulfilling a wide range of applications recently. Concurrent with a low cost target, the market demands high efficiency and high performance designs. Windage and friction losses, caused by rotor rotation and cooling gas flowing through the ventilation circuits, represents one of the largest loss components in air-cooled ...

CFD Analysis of Gear Windage Losses: Validation and Parametric Aerodynamic Studies
Journal of Fluids Engineering, 2011A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method has been applied to gear configurations with and without shrouding. The goals of this work have been to validate the numerical and modeling approaches used for these applications and to develop physical understanding of the aerodynamics of gear windage loss.

Novel Rotor Shape of Switched Reluctance Motor for Windage Loss Reduction
INTERMAG 2006 - IEEE International Magnetics Conference, 2006This paper presents a novel switched reluctance motor rotor shape which has ribs between the rotor salient poles on the rotor outer surface. The conventional switched reluctance motor and the proposed rotor shape which is an aerodynamically cylindrical rotor but magnetically same as a conventional rotor are presented. Using this rotor, the windage loss

Windage Loss Reduction of High-Speed SRM Using Rotor Magnetic Saturation
IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, 2008This paper presents a new approach to reduce windage loss of switched reluctance motor (SRM) by changing the rotor shape. To predict the performance of improved SRM rotor, the parametric finite element analyses are needed to get inductance profiles of the proposed rotor shape.

Research on Windage Power Loss of Spur Gear Base on CFD
Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2012The paper established three-dimensional Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) model of the oil-air mixture in the gearbox after meshing by ICEM CFD simulated the turbulence model by the CFD. The method of calculate the windage power loss (WPL) of the spur gear were put forward.

CFD Simulation for Reduction of Oil Churning Loss and Windage Loss on Aeroengine Transmission Gears
Volume 1: Aircraft Engine; Ceramics; Coal, Biomass and Alternative Fuels; Controls, Diagnostics and Instrumentation; Education; Electric Power; Awards and Honors, 2009In recent years, the demand for power generation capacity has increased considerably due to the electric drive of air conditioners and so on in the engines of civil aircraft. Therefore, it is estimated that power losses may increase in the gearbox because of generators and pumps that in turn augment fuel consumption.

Design of Generator Spline Retaining Ring With Low Windage Loss
Volume 2: Symposia and General Papers, Parts A and B, 2002Retaining rings in a generator are used to constrain the centrifugal force of the field winding end turns. A conventional retaining ring may cause a high pressure drop at the stator-rotor gap entrance and thus result in a large windage loss. The present work relates to the design of a retaining ring with a spline profile near its inboard end to thereby

Preliminary numerical investigations on windage power losses generated by helical gears
2014This paper investigates the windage power loss generated by helical gears rotating in pure air. A three-dimensional approach using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code which has been validated for spur gear is adapted here in order to consider helix angle.

Experimental Investigation of Shrouding on Meshed Spur Gear Windage Power Loss
Proceedings of the Vertical Flight Society 73rd Annual Forum, 2017Windage power loss in high-speed gearboxes result in efficiency losses and increased heating due to drag on the gear teeth. Meshed spur gear windage power loss test results are presented at ambient oil inlet temperatures both with and without shrouding.
