Windage Power Losses From Spiral Bevel Gears With Varying Oil Flows and Shroud Configurations

Journal of Turbomachinery, 2008
In many aero-engines, the power to drive accessories is transmitted through high speed bevel gears in a chamber in the center of the engine. The windage power loss (WPL) associated with these gears makes a significant contribution to the overall heat generation within the chamber.

Windage, churning and pocketing power losses of gears: different modeling approaches for different goals

Forschung im Ingenieurwesen, 2016
Energy efficiency represents one of the most relevant trends in many fields, including the sector of power transmissions and gears, which are involved whenever power has to transmitted and transformed. For instance, in the automotive industry, gearboxes can contribute to the overall efficiency of the system and promote lower fuel consumption and ...

A mechanism-based characterization of the load-independent power loss of dip-lubricated gears

Proceedings of the Institution of mechanical engineers. Part J, journal of engineering tribology
In gearboxes, the transmission of power and motion is accompanied by power losses. Load-independent power losses are particularly relevant at higher circumferential speeds.

Development of a quasi-analytical model to predict the windage power losses of a spiral bevel gear

Tribology International, 2020
Abstract Windage effects becomes prevailing in high speed areo-engine applications. The present paper is to provide some theoretical findings to predict the windage power loss for spiral bevel gears. Firstly, a quasi-analytical model detailing the flow pattern surrounding the spiral bevel gear including the toe, heel and gear teeth.

CFD Simulation of Turbulent Flow Around a Shrouded Spur Gear for Predicting Load-Independent Windage Power Losses

2018
Load-independent power losses, namely windage power losses, are of big concern when the gearbox is loaded without oil lubrication. Air and/or oil mist are the fluid medium and should be studied before the addition of oil churning and squeezing losses. In this study, firstly, two dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approaches are followed to ...
