Although forces induced by winds account for only about 15% of the total forces acting on most offshore structures during periods of intense wind, water wave and current excitation, it is useful to review many of the salient features of wind loadings for two reasons.

The article reports that the first offshore wind farm in the U.S., the Block Island Wind Farm, will start operating in November 2016 in Rhode Island. Topics discussed include the electric power capacity of the wind farm, the factors behind the U.S.' slow adoption of offshore wind power and the amount appropriated by the U.S.

Wind is one of the fundamental aspects of man’s environment. In many ways, it is vital to our existence: it diffuses and removes local concentrations of pollutants and transports substances vital to life; it redistributes latent and sensible energy which fuel our weather systems; and historically it has been important as an energy source, both on land ...

ILLY CRYSTAL ONCE quipped, ‘‘Change is hard work.’’ This is true, but change also brings opportunity, and, when done well, change can be amazing. The Executive Committee (EC) of the Council on Renal Nutrition (CRN) has undergone some changes this year. We have said expected and unexpected goodbyes to some dynamic women, and we have welcomed a new group

From its rebirth in the early 1980s, the rate of development of wind energy has been dramatic. Today, other than hydropower, it is the most important of the renewable sources of power. The UK Government and the EU Commission have adopted targets for renewable energy generation of 10 and 12% of consumption, respectively. Much of this, by necessity, must

American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, 2000
The practice of orthodontics is changing at what appears to be an almost alarming rate. The changes that have occurred during the last 45 plus years, when I first entered orthodontic practice are staggering. Who would have conceived brackets being bonded directly to the enamel surfaces of teeth? At that time, all bands were custom-made from gold strips.

Nursing Standard, 1987
I am becoming increasingly concerned for nurses working in hospital settings who are dealing with the terminally ill, in particular those who work without the support of a second nurse. With the present state of flux in the National Health Service and with the hurricane force winds of change that Griffiths has engendered, I fear that nurses working in ...
