The paper presents work on developing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with morphing inflatable wings. Inflatable wing stiffness varies with internal pressure, which is required for operation. The possibility exists to manipulate the wings through mechanical mechanisms to alter their performance and control the UAV.

Pressurized Morphing Wing Structures
53rd AIAA/ASME/ASCE/AHS/ASC Structures, Structural Dynamics and Materials Conference
20th AIAA/ASME/AHS Adaptive Structures Conference
14th AIAA, 2012The combination of structural material and fluid pressure may result in a morphing structure with integrated shape-change and stiffness functions. In a cellular arrangement, distributed actuation, high control fidelity and a multitude of morphing shapes can also be achieved.

The use of compliant structures has revealed itself as one of the key ideas for the realisation of morphing airfoils. In this paper, recent developments on this area at Empa are described. The first main topic treated in this work is the development of an innovative construction philosophy which conciliates compliant mechanisms with the principles of ...

Dynamic Response of a Morphing Wing
2020This work aims to develope a computational framework to predict the dynamic response of a morphing wing. Unlike conventional aerodynamic surfaces, the investigated wing has the capability of continuously morphing its trailing edge shape in order to improve the wing aerodynamic performance. The computational tool here developed incorporates a structural

Telescopic Wing-Box for a Morphing Wing
24th AIAA/AHS Adaptive Structures Conference, 2016This paper describes the design and testing of a wing-box capable of producing wingspan changes for flight speed adaptation developed within the CHANGE project. One of the goals of CHANGE was to design and implement a morphing wing that could combine more than one morphing concept. The capabilities adopted for this wing are span change and leading edge

Morphing Wing Design for Fixed Wing Aircraft
56th AIAA/ASCE/AHS/ASC Structures, Structural Dynamics, and Materials Conference, 2015A design approach is described that considers the design of aircraft wing structures that incorporate morphing devices. The methodology is generic rather than device specific, and determines the best distribution of morphing concept that enables minimisation of weight for minimum morphing application across the design flight envelope.

Morphing wings for unmanned aircraft
Smart Materials Bulletin, 2001Abstract Here a computational model is presented which predicts the force, stroke and energy needed to overcome aerodynamic loads encountered by morphing wings, to perform aircraft manoeuvres. The aerodynamic load algorithms have been verified against more time-expensive codes.

Variable Camber Morphing Wings
2016Abstract : This project is inserted within the scope of the technology of morphing aircrafts. Specifically, the research team investigated, in a multidisciplinary framework, the design methodology of variable camber morphing wings based on the use of active materials, namely piezoelectric materials and shape memory alloys.
