Failure Analysis of a Wire Rope

Practical Failure Analysis, 2002
Abstract Wire ropes, pulleys, counterweights, and connecting systems are used for auto tensioning of contact wires of electric railways. A wire rope in one such auto tensioning system suffered premature failure. Failure investigation revealed fatigue cracks initiating at nonmetallic inclusions near the surface of individual wire strands ...

Wire Rope Transmission Losses

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, 1963
Transmission losses are determined for 20 wire ropes commonly used in crane and hoist practice. The apparatus and procedure used in determining the losses are described and the results are presented in the form of graphs. From these graphs the law governing the losses is established.

Friction in Wire Rope

1990
Chapter 3 considered the static response of a simple straight strand with the cross section shown in Figure 3.1. It was assumed in that chapter that the wires were frictionless. It will now be shown that friction plays a very small role in the axial loading of a simple strand.
