Estimating expenditure impacts without expenditure data using asset proxies [PDF]

open access: yes
When asset indices are used in regressions the coefficients obtained are typically difficult to interpret. We show how lower bounds on expenditure effects can be extracted, if the relationship between the assets and expenditure can be calibrated on an ...

Vertical transmission of the entomopathogenic soil fungus Scopulariopsis brevicaulis as a contaminant of eggs in the winter tick, Dermacentor albipictus, collected from calf moose (New Hampshire, USA)

open access: yesMycology, 2019
Moose naturally acquire soil fungi on their fur that are entomopathogenic to the winter tick, Dermacentor albipictus. Presumed to provide a measure of on-host tick control, it is unknown whether these soil fungi impact subsequent off-host stages of the ...

Biparental inbreeding depression, genetic relatedness and progeny vigor in a wind-pollinated treeline species in Argentina [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Spatially restricted gene flow and resulting spatial genetic structure are generally considered as being the primary controlling factors in the dynamics of biparental inbreeding depression in a wide range of plant species.

Representativeness of the Natura 2000 network for preserving plant biodiversity in the European Union

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract The Natura 2000 (N2K) network of protected areas is one of the main tools for area‐based conservation in the European Union (EU), yet its role in preserving plant biodiversity requires better understanding. We examined data kept in the European Vegetation Archive from over 1.2 million vegetation plots and obtained over 14.2 million plant ...

Constitutional symptoms and response to Penicillin G in erysipelas and cellulitis – a monocentric, retrospective, explorative study

open access: yesJDDG: Journal der Deutschen Dermatologischen Gesellschaft, EarlyView.
Summary Background: Erysipelas, caused by streptococci, should be treated with penicillin, while uncomplicated cellulitis (phlegmon), often caused by Staphylococcus aureus, requires penicillinase‐resistant beta‐lactam antibiotics, which have a higher risk of adverse effects. Distinguishing between these infections is important.

Uncertainty estimates and L_2 bounds for the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation

open access: yes, 2005
We consider the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky (KS) equation in one spatial dimension with periodic boundary conditions. We apply a Lyapunov function argument similar to the one first introduced by Nicolaenko, Scheurer, and Temam, and later improved by Collet ...
