Robotic Astronomy with the Faulkes Telescopes and Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope

open access: yesAdvances in Astronomy, Volume 2010, Issue 1, 2010., 2010
We present results from ongoing science projects conducted by members of the Faulkes Telescope (FT) team and Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope (LCOGT). Many of these projects incorporate observations carried out and analysed by FT users, comprising amateur astronomers and schools.

Adiabatic Mass Loss in Binary Stars. VI. Massive Mass Helium Binary Stars

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
The stability of binary mass transfer is a critical problem for binary evolution. We systematically calculate the adiabatic mass-loss model for naked helium stars with masses ranging from 10 M _⊙ to 80 M _⊙ to study the critical mass ratio ( q _crit ) of

Properties of Wolf-Rayet Binaries: The Key to Understanding Wolf-Rayet Stars [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1995
It is argued that, with few exceptions, WR stars in binaries are essentially indistinguishable from single WR stars of the same subtype. In particular, mass transfer from one star to the other can be neglected, being completely dominated by the winds and their interaction.

Wolf-Rayet stars in the Magellanic Clouds [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1979
Up to now 4 WR stars were known in the SMC (Breysacher and Westerlund, 1978) and 76 in the LMC (Fehrenbach et al., 1976). Because no systematic search for WR stars in the SMC had ever been made, a survey was carried out with the ESO Objective Prism Astrograph which resulted in the identification of 4 new WR stars of the WN type, afterwards confirmed by

Recursive Feature Elimination With Cross‐Validation for Experimental Surface Electromyography Signal Decoding

open access: yesComplexity, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Surface electromyography (sEMG) plays a crucial role in decoding neuromuscular activity, with applications in prosthetic control and human–computer interaction. While extensive research has focused on hand gesture classification, discriminating identical hand movements performed at varying wrist angles remains underexplored.

Quark‐Nova Explosion inside a Collapsar: Application to Gamma Ray Bursts

open access: yesAdvances in Astronomy, Volume 2009, Issue 1, 2009., 2009
If a quark‐nova occurs inside a collapsar, the interaction between the quark‐nova ejecta (relativistic iron‐rich chunks) and the collapsar envelope leads to features indicative of those observed in Gamma Ray Bursts. The quark‐nova ejecta collides with the stellar envelope creating an outward moving cap (Γ∼ 1–10) above the polar funnel. Prompt gamma‐ray

Wolf-Rayet Stars in the Magellanic Clouds [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1991
The most striking feature of the Wolf-Rayet stars in the Magellanic Clouds is their subtype distribution. The range of WC subtypes found in the Large and Small Cloud agrees with evolutionary model predictions at the corresponding metallicities. It follows that the WR subtype distribution in any external galaxy is a clear indicator of the metallicity in

Pulsation of Wolf–Rayet stars: WR40 [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1994
In the past several Wolf–Rayet stars have been investigated photometrically by different authors to search for fast pulsations. So far all results were negative. However, in 1992 Blecha, Schaller & Maeder published a 627sec period with a semi–amplitude of about 2.5mmag for the Southern Wolf–Rayet star WR40 (HD96548).

Probing extreme black‐hole outflows on short timescales via high spectral‐resolution x‐ray imagers

open access: yesAstronomische Nachrichten, Volume 345, Issue 6-7, July-August 2024.
Abstract We investigate outflows and the physics of super‐Eddington versus sub‐Eddington regimes in black hole systems. Our focus is on prospective science using next‐generation high‐resolution soft x‐ray instruments. We highlight the properties of black hole ultraluminous x‐ray source (ULX) systems in particular. Owing to scale invariance in accreting
