The sol–gel-based modification of wood introduces chemical substances into wood in order to improve its characteristics and impart new properties. It stabilizes dimensions of wood (timber) components, increases its strength and resistance to water, and reduces cracking. Many sol–gel-based impregnations aim to protect against wood rot and fire.

Cationic gemini compounds with antifungal activity and wood preservation potentiality
Journal of Industrial & Engineering Chemistry, 2019Three gemini compounds were synthesized and characterized in the search of an alternative eco-friendly wood preservative. Synthesis was carried out from N,N-dimethylamines and 2-O-acetyl-1,3- dichloropropane as linker molecule.

Study on wood preservation state of Chinese ancient shipwreck Huaguangjiao І
Journal of Cultural Heritage, 2018Huaguangjiao І is a Chinese ancient wooden shipwreck of South Song Dyansty (1127–1279 AD). Wood samples from Huaguangjiao І were analyzed in order to evaluate the preservation state of the waterlogged wood.
