Wood quality of durable eucalypts

2021
Eucalypts are used globally on a larger scale for pulpwood than for sawn timber. They are known for high growth stresses which have limited its value and productivity as sawn timber. Previous studies have addressed the growth stress problem in some species but not at a large scale, as they are time consuming and costly to measure.

Sound quality assessment of wood for xylophone bars

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2007
Xylophone sounds produced by striking wooden bars with a mallet are strongly influenced by the mechanical properties of the wood species chosen by the xylophone maker. In this paper, we address the relationship between the sound quality based on the timbre attribute of impacted wooden bars and the physical parameters characterizing wood species.

Wood-burning appliances and indoor air quality

Science of The Total Environment, 2001
Wood heating represents an interesting economic alternative to electrical or heating oil and gas systems. However, many people are concerned about poor indoor air quality in homes equipped with wood-burning appliances. We conducted a study in the Quebec City region (Canada) to verify the extent of indoor air contamination, and to examine the frequency ...

Microbial communities in large-scale wood piles and their effects on wood quality and the environment

Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology, 2012
The demand of renewable energy sources, i.e. biomass, is steadily increasing worldwide to reduce the need of fossil energy sources. Biomass such as energy crops, woody species, forestry and agricultural residues are the most common renewable energy sources.

Growth Rates and Wood Quality

2013
The growth rate of trees in a plantation depends on the species planted, the environmental conditions of the site and the silvicultural practices that are employed. For plantations being grown for the production of wood for industrial purposes (mainly building materials and paper), the fastest growing would have an annual growth rate increasing ...

Methodology of Virtual Wood Piece Quality Evaluation

2015
This paper presents a way to evaluate the quality of virtual wood products according to their tomographic image. The main objective is to anticipate a sawmill divergent process in order to enhance the production plan. From a virtual representation of the product, singularity features are extracted and their impact on the product virtual quality is ...

Biology of Decay and Wood Quality

1975
Decay is the final stage of a long and complicated process that is initiated by wounds and involves chemical and anatomical protective responses of the tree and interactions of microorganisms among themselves and with the tree. A model of the decay process has been developed, based on the events that are known to occur from the time of wounding to ...
