Vibration welding of heat-treated wood
Journal of Adhesion Science and Technology, 2006Vibration welding of wood that has been preheated according to an industrial two-step process indicates that such wood can be welded and can yield welded joints of good strength. The joint strength is, however, markedly lower than obtained when welding non-heat-treated timber.

Emission Gases in Linear Vibration Welding of Wood
Journal of Adhesion Science and Technology, 2009Analysis of the gases, vapour and degradation volatiles emitted as smoke from the welding interface during linear vibration welding of beech and oak woods has shown that the compounds in such a smoke are water vapour, CO2, and degradation compounds from wood polymeric carbohydrates as well as from amorphous lignin. For the two hardwoods tested the main

Welding of wood, a new challenge for the wood industry
2004In the years 2001/04 the HSB, R+D department has been investigating possible alternatives to traditional gluing processes. The objective of the project was the development of an innovative gluing and assembling process that would be applicable both economically and qualitatively in an industrial production. This research work, led to the discovery that

Wood joints and laminated wood beams assembled by mechanically-welded wood dowels
Journal of Adhesion Science and Technology, 2007Dowel welding by high-speed rotation was used to join two wood blocks and strong joints were obtained. Dowel angle to the surface of the wood blocks to be joined had a marked influence on the mechanical performance of the joint. When the dowel was inserted at 90° to the substrate, the dowel was subjected to and resisted a shear force only.

Wood-dowel rotation welding – a heat-transfer model
Journal of Adhesion Science and Technology, 2007The relationship between temperature, time of friction and thermal flux for high-speed rotational wood-dowel welding has been modelled through a heat-transfer model. It was shown that the interface temperature could be estimated as a function of the friction time by the general equation T0 = Ti + 2βuτ√α/h√π √t, where T0 - temperature at the welding ...

Wood blockboards for construction fabricated by wood welding with pre-oiled dowels
Journal of Adhesion Science and Technology, 2013Holding wood pieces together by rotationally welded dowels can be used to make blockboard panels with the dowels inserted in the side of the wood substrate slats. Pre-oiling the dowels with sunflower oil: (i) eases their insertion in the pre-drilled substrate, (ii) allows the insertion of dowels to a much greater depth by its lubricating action for ...

Development of an automated wood welding process
Journal of Adhesion Science and Technology, 2014Friction welding of wood is an active field of research and would seem to be a potential joining technology in wood industries in the near future. Despite numerous scientific publications in this field, automated industrial applications of this technique are not common up to now.

Welding-through doweling of wood panels
Holz als Roh- und Werkstoff, 2006Panel products have been joined to levels satisfying the requirements of the relevant standards for metallic connector assemblies by rotation welding of beech dowels through them. The wood panels substrates such as particleboard, OSB and MDF welded to the dowels almost as well as solid timber.

Wood welding: Chemical and physical changes according to the welding time
2008Wood welding using linear friction is a technique that has been developed in the past five years. The goal of this study was to analyze the microstructure development in the interphase enabling the wood-to-wood adhesion without any adhesive. Chemical and physical analyses have been carried out using infrared ther- mography, mechanical shear tests ...

Linear welding of grooved wood surfaces
European Journal of Wood and Wood Products, 2009Linear wood welding of grooved surfaces to ease the elimination of water vapour and to increase the welding surface was performed in this study.
