Welding of modified beech wood

2011
Wood welding is a mechanical, physical and chemical process during which melt is produced, which then turns into a solid joint after cooling. The paper shows current world-wide knowledge on welding of modified wood while the results of wood welding were received from the Faculty of Forestry in Zagreb.

Interface microstructure development during wood welding

2008
Wood welding using linear friction is a technique that has been developed in the past five years. The goal of this study was to analyze the microstructure development in the interphase enabling the wood-to-wood adhesion without any adhesive. Chemical and physical analyses have been carried out using infrared thermography, mechanical shear tests ...

Wood Blockboards Fabricated by Rotational Dowel Welding

Journal of Adhesion Science and Technology, 2011
Holding wood pieces together by rotationally welded dowels can be used to make blockboard panels with the dowels inserted in the side of the wood substrate slats. The average results for both tensile and three-point bending tests indicate that a 20° dowel insertion angle yields strength results better than 10° and 0° insertion angles.

Joining of wood layers by friction welding

Journal of Adhesion Science and Technology, 2005
A welding technique has been developed to join wooden work pieces by frictional heat without any wood glue. During the welding process 'melting' of the surfaces, resulting from the influence of pressure and frictional heat, was observed. Solidification and bond formation between the welded pieces happened during cool down of the heat-affected zone. The

Development of an automated wood welding process

Journal of Adhesion Science and Technology, 2014
Friction welding of wood is an active field of research and would seem to be a potential joining technology in wood industries in the near future. Despite numerous scientific publications in this field, automated industrial applications of this technique are not common up to now.

Wood Welded Connections: Energy Release Rate Measurement

Journal of Adhesion Science and Technology, 2008
The energy release rates of beech specimens bonded by linear friction welding were determined using double cantilever beam (DCB) tests. The analysis of the results was carried out with the experimental compliance method, which is based on the linear-elastic fracture mechanics.

Wood welding – a new wood bonding technology

2007
Wood welding technologies have been developed as a new way of bonding timber by using high temperature generated by friction and pressure. Timber is assembled without any adhesives. During the process the surface layer of timber (lignin), which is in direct contact with its counterpart, melts due to high pressure and temperature, which is usually ...

Comparative potential of alternative wood welding systems, ultrasonic and microfriction stir welding

Journal of Adhesion Science and Technology, 2007
Two alternative welding systems were evaluated for wood welding. Ultrasonic welding produces joints of good strength but it appears to be applicable only to thin wood pieces. It does not appear that further possible process improvement could bring the joint strength to a structural level.

Welding of wood, a new challenge for the wood industry

2004
In the years 2001/04 the HSB, R+D department has been investigating possible alternatives to traditional gluing processes. The objective of the project was the development of an innovative gluing and assembling process that would be applicable both economically and qualitatively in an industrial production. This research work, led to the discovery that
