Contamination – On Form and Function of a Type of Word Formation in German
2008“Contamination” (“blending”, “blend”, “portmanteau”) denotes the process and the result of joining at least two words to a new unit of form and content. Thus the word Orapfel is a contamination of Orange and Apfel, and SchreIBMaschine is a combination of Schreibmaschine and the name of the company IBM (International Business Machines).
