Arithmetic word-problem-solving in Huntington’s disease

Brain and Cognition, 2005
The purpose of this study was to examine executive functioning in patients with Huntington's disease using an arithmetic word-problem-solving task including eight solvable problems of increasing complexity and four aberrant problems. Ten patients with Huntington's disease and 12 normal control subjects matched by age and education were tested. Patients

Solving word problems: A case of modelling?

Learning and Instruction, 1997
According to the researchers who report in this set of papers there are two causes for the phenomenon that primary- and secondary-school students ignore relevant and plausibly familiar aspects of reality in answering word problems. The first cause is the stereotyped character of common word problems. The second cause lies in the classroom climate.

Solving mathematical word problems

5 to 7 Educator, 2010
Some children calculate with ease but have difficulty solving word problems. Understanding the words and choosing the correct strategy to solve the problem needs practice, especially if English is not your first language. Although much of this work uses multiplication and division, the work can easily be covered using both year 1 and year 2 methods.

Solving Multiplication Word Problems

2020
In this chapter, the authors first try to learn from the additive case, and they then move to an analysis of multiplicative situations with the intention of discovering the basic multiplicative problem types. All the problems given as examples of asymmetric situations in this chapter describes the implicit models paradigm fall under Schwartz's.

Selecting examples for solving word problems.

Journal of Educational Psychology, 1994
College students studied the solution of a simple and a complex example, then they used the examples to construct equations for algebra word problems. The frequency with which they referred to each example across 8 test problems that varied in complexity was recorded.

Usefulness of Tables for Solving Word Problems

Cognition and Instruction, 1987
Our previous research on algebra word problems (Reed, Dempster, & Ettinger, 1985) revealed that students usually could not use one problem's solution to solve a similar problem that required a slight modification of the solution. In an attempt to improve their performance, we gave students practice on either filling in tables or using completed tables.
