Pattern Recognition, 1976
Abstract Relatively low character error rates can often lead to prohibitive levels of word error rates. This paper examines several techniques for integrating an independent contextual postprocessor (CPP) into a full classification system. Using positional binary n -grams the CPP can correct many errors directly.

Recognition intent and visual word recognition
Consciousness and Cognition, 2009This study adopted a change detection task to investigate whether and how recognition intent affects the construction of orthographic representation in visual word recognition. Chinese readers (Experiment 1-1) and nonreaders (Experiment 1-2) detected color changes in radical components of Chinese characters.

Word Recognition and Word Recall
Psychological Reports, 1981153 college students, given a 20-word spelling test, followed by a recall and then a recognition test of the words, did significantly better on the recognition test than on recall—even though the interval between learning and recognition was greater than the interval between learning and recall. 93 females scored somewhat higher on the recall test than

The psychology of word recognition
IJCNN'99. International Joint Conference on Neural Networks. Proceedings (Cat. No.99CH36339), 2003Visual word recognition begins with the preconscious encoding of semantic, orthographic, phonological, and graphic information. The methods used for exploring these issues are described, as well as the available data. These data sources are then used for activating lexical entries (memory codes), and it appears that the integration of these diverse ...

Word Recognition in Presbyacusis
Scandinavian Audiology, 1990Word recognition assessed as discrimination loss was analysed in 269 women ranging from 60 to 89 years of age. A clear relationship was found between the discrimination loss and the hearing loss (calculated as the average hearing threshold level at 1,000, 2,000, and 4,000 Hz).

An Algorithm for Connected Word Recognition
ICASSP '82. IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing, 1982The principles of an efficient one-pass dynamic programming whole-word pattern matching algorithm for the recognition of spoken sequences of connected words are described. Particular attention is given to the technique for keeping track of word-sequence decisions, which may be constrained by a finite-state syntax.

Word Knowledge and Letter Recognition as Determinants of Word Recognition
1979The recognition of words during reading implies not only that letters, or other constituent parts of words, are seen, but also that words are known. In a recognition model for words of three letters, developed by Bouma and Bouwhuis (1975), word perception is thought to be mediated both by recognition of the constituent letters in their position and by ...

Parafoveal processing in word recognition
The Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology A, 2000Two experiments investigated the degree to which properties of a word presented in the parafovea influenced the time to process a word undergoing concurrent foveal inspection. In Experiment 1, subjects viewed a set of five-letter words at a fixed point, with words in parafoveal vision varying in length, word frequency, and both the type and token ...

Robust features for word recognition
Speech Communication, 1988This paper presents a new approach to automatic recognition of spoken words. After discussing the demands upon appropriate subword units and reporting some experiments in using phone superclasses for word recognition we will develop techniques of robust classification, segmentation, and lexical access, utilizing binary phonetic features as processing ...

Word normalization for online handwritten word recognition
Proceedings of the 12th IAPR International Conference on Pattern Recognition (Cat. No.94CH3440-5), 2002We introduce a new approach to normalizing words written with an electronic stylus that applies to all styles of handwriting (upper case, lower case, printed, cursive, or mixed). A geometrical model of the word spatial structure is fitted to the pen trajectory using the expectation-maximisation algorithm. The fitting process maximizes the likelihood of
