Musicians and the Metric Structure of Words
Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience, 2011Abstract The present study aimed to examine the influence of musical expertise on the metric and semantic aspects of speech processing. In two attentional conditions (metric and semantic tasks), musicians listened to short sentences ending in trisyllabic words that were semantically and/or metrically congruous or incongruous.

The structure of single word and continuous word associations
Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1962Summary Twenty Ss were given the task of associating continuously to stimulus words drawn from the Russell-Jenkins list (1954) . The associations were categorized in accordance with a system developed by Laffal, 1960 , Laffal, 1961 . Responses to these same stimulus words obtained by Russell and Jenkins were similarly categorized.

Hairpin Structures in DNA Words
2006We formalize the notion of a DNA hairpin secondary structure, examining its mathematical properties. Two related secondary structures are also investigated, taking into the account imperfect bonds (bulges, mismatches) and multiple hairpins. We characterize maximal sets of hairpin-forming DNA sequences, as well as hairpin-free ones.

Structure in auditory word recognition
Cognition, 1987Abstract Dominant models of auditory word recognition emphasize the lexical access component of the word identification problem. They thus cast the recognition process as a simple operation matching the input against stored lexical representations or direct activation of those representations.

Structure, Combinatorics, and Complexity of “Words”
2006Eduardo Caianiello was an eminent scientist in various fields including Physics and Cybernetics. I met him for the first time at the beginning of the 1960s as a student of his course on Theoretical Physics and I was tremendously impressed by his towering personality. In 1964, I became a member of the Group of Cybernetics at the Institute of Theoretical
