Virtual workpiece: workpiece representation for material removal process
The International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, 2011In this paper, an efficient methodology to generate a virtual workpiece (VWP) is presented. VWP is a workpiece in a virtual environment in which the geometric, kinematic, and thermo-mechanical effects of the process and resources can be reflected. VWP encompasses not only the macro-information corresponding to the shape of the “virtually” machined ...

Process parallel simulation of workpiece temperatures using sensory workpieces
CIRP Journal of Manufacturing Science and Technology, 2018Abstract Process induced heat causes workpiece shape deviations during machining and may result in rejected parts. As unpredictable processing and boundary conditions cannot be simulated in the process planning phase, a process parallel simulation of the workpiece temperature is required to observe and compensate thermal effects.

A plurality of discs (7) arranged along a central shaft and having holders (8) uniformly distributed over the circumference, inclined obliquely outwards and intended for workpieces are supported in each case on a ring (5) surrounding the discs (7). The successive rings (5) form an approximately cylindrical cladding which prevents undesired coating of ...

Tolerance Control in Workpiece Fixturing
Volume 4: 4th Design for Manufacturing Conference, 1999Abstract When designing parts with tight tolerances, care must be paid to ensure that specified accuracy can be yielded despite manufacturing deviations. An issue to be considered is how deviations on datum elements propagate on toleranced features, taking into account configuration of locating fixtures used in manufacturing set-ups. The

Abstract In this paper, we present the spatial and planar force-displacement relationships which characterize individual contacts on a fixtured workpiece. The compliance at each contact is modeled and expressions for the changes in contact forces as a function of the rigid body relative motion between the fixture elements and the ...

Machining of Magnesium Workpieces
Advanced Engineering Materials, 1999Cutting tools coated with polycrystalline diamond (DP) show a superior behavior in dry machining of magnesium alloys compared to uncoated or TiN-coated cermented carbide tools. With their usage one can best avoid adhesion between cutting tool and workpiece material as well as material build-up.

The Workpiece Material in Machining
The International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, 1999From forming operations, it is known that the fracture strain under different stress conditions can be predicted by using ductility curves. These curves can be determined easily by two simple material tests. It will be shown that these curves can also be used to understand chip breaking.
