Deep operator network models for predicting post-burn contraction [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
Burn injuries present a significant global health challenge. Among the most severe long-term consequences are contractures, which can lead to functional impairments and disfigurement. Understanding and predicting the evolution of post-burn wounds is essential for developing effective treatment strategies. Traditional mathematical models, while accurate,

Traumatic Brain Injury: The Signature Wound of the Iraq War [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Traumatic Brain Injury, or TBI, is the signature wound of the Iraq War. It can be caused by bullets or shrapnel hitting the head or neck, but also by the blast injuries that often result from mortar attacks or roadside bombs.

The Impact of Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome Burden on Pain, Neuropathy Severity and Fiber Type

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Determine the association between diabetes and metabolic syndrome (MetS) burden (number of MetS criteria fulfilled) and pain, neuropathy severity, and fiber type involvement in individuals with established polyneuropathy. Methods The Peripheral Neuropathy Research Registry was queried for individuals with type 1 and type 2 diabetes ...

Serotonergic and Dopaminergic Function in Neuropsychiatrically Asymptomatic People With HIV on Antiretroviral Therapy

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective People with HIV (PWH) on antiretroviral therapy (ART) still experience neurocognitive dysfunction and accelerated brain volume loss. To assess whether the serotonergic and dopaminergic systems are affected, we used [11C]DASB positron emission tomography (PET) to assess presynaptic serotonergic function and [18F]FDOPA PET to measure ...

Mathematical and numerical methods for understanding immune cell motion during wound healing [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
In this paper, we propose a new workflow to analyze macrophage motion during wound healing. These immune cells are attracted to the wound after an injury and they move showing both directional and random motion. Thus, first, we smooth the trajectories and we separate the random from the directional parts of the motion.

Military Service Roles and ALS Among Veterans: A Matched Case–Control Study

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT While military service is an established risk factor for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), it remains unclear whether this association is linked to combat. We conducted a matched case–control study comparing 191 ALS patients who were veterans of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) with known military service type and 1910 matched controls. The

The application of collagen in advanced wound dressings [PDF]

open access: yesAdvanced Textiles for Wound Care (2nd ed), 2018, 2018
Chronic wounds fail to proceed through an orderly and timely self healing process, resulting in cutaneous damage with full thickness in depth and leading to a major healthcare and economic burden worldwide. In the UK alone, 200,000 patients suffer from a chronic wound, whilst the global advanced wound care market is expected to reach nearly $11 million

NASA Light Emitting Diode Medical Applications from Deep Space to Deep Sea [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
This work is supported and managed through the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center-SBIR Program. LED-technology developed for NASA plant growth experiments in space shows promise for delivering light deep into tissues of the body to promote wound healing ...

Pathway Analyses of Inherited Neuropathies Identify Putative Common Mechanisms of Axon Degeneration

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Inherited neuropathies (IN) are associated with over 100 different genetic mutations presenting with a variety of phenotypes. This complexity suggests multiple pathways may converge onto a limited number of downstream pathways to effect axonal injury.
