The writhe of a self-avoiding walk

Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and General, 1994
Summary: The writhe of a self-avoiding walk in a three-dimensional space is the average over all projections onto a plane of the sum of the signed crossings. We compute this number using a Monte Carlo simulation. Our results suggest that the average of the absolute value of the writhe of self-avoiding walks increases as \(n^\alpha\), where \(n\) is the

Möbius molecules with twists and writhes

Chemical Communications, 2013
Möbius molecules do not have to be highly strained. There are general strategies to design their synthesis, and to analyze their topology.

The writhe of a self-avoiding polygon

Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and General, 1993
Summary: We discuss the writhe of a self-avoiding polygon on a lattice, as a geometrical measure of its entanglement complexity. We prove a rigorous result about the dependence of the absolute value of the writhe on the number \(n\) of edges in the polygon, and use Monte Carlo methods to estimate the distribution of the writhe both for all polygons ...

THE WRITHE OF ORIENTED POLYGONAL GRAPHS

Journal of Knot Theory and Its Ramifications, 2008
Given an edge-oriented polygonal graph in ℝ3, we describe a method for computing the writhe as the average of weighted directional writhe numbers of the graph in a few directions. These directions are determined by the graph and the weights are determined by areas of path-connected open regions on the unit sphere.

Writhe distribution of stiff biopolymers

Physical Review E, 2008
Motivated by the interest in the role of stiff polymers like actin in cellular processes and as components of biopolymer networks like the cytoskeleton, we present a statistical mechanical study of the twist elasticity of stiff polymers. We obtain simple, approximate analytical forms for the writhe distribution at zero applied force.

DNA Transcription: Keeping the writhe

Current Biology, 1994
A new model system has been used to demonstrate how a nucleosome may remain associated with an actively transcribed gene and yet maintain DNA compaction during transcription.

The Writhing Laocoön

Abstract This chapter examines Susan Sontag’s engagement with Greco-Roman texts, images, and artefacts in her seminal work, Regarding the Pain of Others (2003). Through an exploration of the dynamic interplay between ancient works, encompassing those by Homer, Aeschylus, Plato, and Aristotle, and the discourse surrounding modern war ...

Computing the writhe on lattices

Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and General, 2006
Given a polygonal closed curve on a lattice or space group, we describe a method for computing the writhe of the curve as the average of weighted projected writhing numbers of the polygon in a few directions. These directions are determined by the lattice geometry, the weights are determined by areas of regions on the unit 2-sphere, and the regions are

Link, Writhe, and Twist

2017
We review the concepts of writhe, twist, and linking as applied to space curves and ribbons. The application of these concepts to DNA is also discussed.
