Suppression of glitches in X-ray measurements

Abstract There are two approaches in eliminating glitches that occur at particular X-ray monochromator energies due to coincidences of several reflections which take intensity from the main beam. The first is to move the monochromator crystals in such a manner as to avoid producing the glitches. This is very difficult in practice.

Soft X-ray pulses from neutron star glitches

Glitches release energy in the interiors of neutron stars. In some models of glitches, such as those involving the sudden transfer of angular momentum to the stellar crust from a more rapidly rotating neutron superfluid, the energy liberated is large enough (∼10 38 −10 43 ergs) to noticeably raise the temperature of the stellar surface.

Optimal azimuthal orientation for Si(111) double-crystal monochromators to achieve the least amount of glitches in the hard X-ray region

Simulations of the periods, split regularities and mirror symmetries of the glitch pattern of a Si(111) crystal along with the azimuthal angles are presented. The glitch patterns of Si(111) double-crystal monochromators (DCMs) are found to be the superposition of the two sets of glitch patterns from the two crystals.

Crystal glitches arise when the Bragg condition is fulfilled for more than one set of lattice planes simultaneously, which can only occur at discrete energies [1]. At these energies the intensity of the x-ray beam emerging from the monochromator will exhibit a more or less pronounced dip.

Glitches are common phenomena in pulsars. After each glitch, there is often a permanent increase in the pulsar's spin-down rate. Therefore, a pulsar's present spin-down rate may be much higher than its initial value and the characteristic age of a pulsar based on its present spin-down rate and period may be shorter than its true age.
