The X chromosome and the ovary*1

Journal of the Society for Gynecologic Investigation, 2001
X chromosome abnormalities are the leading identifiable cause of premature ovarian failure (POF). POF-related abnormalities range from the complete absence of one X chromosome to assorted deletions and translocations to mutations in specific genes.

The X—a sexy chromosome

BioEssays, 2001
AbstractThere is new and convincing evidence(1) that the mammalian X chromosome, as well as the Y chromosome, contains an atypically high proportion of genes involved in sex and reproduction (SRR genes). Here we consider alternative explanations for this concentration.

Inactivation of the X-Chromosome

New England Journal of Medicine, 1972
IN its classic form, the hypothesis of X-chromosome inactivation holds that only one of the two X-chromosomes present in cells of female mammals is functional. The "decision" of which X-chromosome is to operate in a cell occurs quite early in embryogenesis and, once made, is irreversible for that cell and all its progeny.

Mouse X chromosome

Mammalian Genome, 1997
Overall, the probe map fromDXWas70 toAmg encompasses 72 cM and includes 103 loci. Eight of these have been designated reference loci (see Table 2 and previous section) on account of their wide usage that would enable the cross reference of independent maps created in different laboratories.

Chromosome 9 of Ellobius lutescens is the X chromosome [PDF]

open access: possibleChromosoma, 1988
Ellobius lutescens carries an apparently identical karyotype (2n = 17) in both sexes. On the basis of indirect evidence the unpaired chromosome 9 has been considered to represent the X chromosome of this species. We have obtained data to substantiate this view by four different techniques. After fusion of HPRT- RAG cells with E.

Methylation and the X chromosome

BioEssays, 1986
AbstractRecent approaches towards an understanding of the molecular basis of X‐chromosome inactivation in mammals suggest that regulation is due to multiple events including DNA methylation.

X Chromosome and Ovarian Failure

Seminars in Reproductive Medicine, 2007
Genes for reproduction are enriched on the sex chromosomes and they may be involved in the many forms of X- or Y-linked infertility. Here we review the X-linked disorders of ovulation and we show that despite the relatively frequent observation of X chromosome rearrangements in women with ovarian dysgenesis or ovarian failure, the search for X-linked ...

X-Chromosome workshop

Psychiatric Genetics, 1998
Researchers presented results of ongoing research to the X-chromosome workshop of the Fifth World Congress on Psychiatric Genetics, covering a wide range of disorders: X-linked infantile spasms; a complex phenotype associated with deletions of Xp11; male homosexuality; degree of handedness; bipolar affective disorder; schizophrenia; childhood onset ...
