Evaluation of clinical, radiological and pathological data from 10 adult patients with xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis has been carried out. There are no pathognomonic diagnostic features, but the majority of patients present with a previous history of recurrent urinary tract disorders.

Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis is a rare condition in children. A 7-year-old boy developed right flank pain and tenderness 1 month after an appendectomy. Abdominal computed tomography scan documented a right renal mass. A right nephrectomy was performed. The pathological report documents xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis.

SUMMARY A case of tumefactive xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis has been reported. This obscure inflammatory process presented clinically as a neoplastic lump and had strikingly different gross and histological appearances from a classical pyelonephritis.

Three cases of a rare renal lesion, xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis, are presented. Amyloidosis, hitherto unreported in association with this lesion, was found in the liver in one case. The need for an accurate preoperative diagnosis and long-term follow up are discussed.

AbstractThirty‐eight nephrectomy specimens and two biopsies of perinephric abscesses from patients with xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis have been examined. Twenty showed evidence of venous damage. This included organised thrombi in 12, intimal thickening in five and phlebitis in three.
