The northern naked-tailed armadillo in the Lacandona rainforest, Mexico: new records and potential threats

open access: yesRevista Mexicana de Biodiversidad, 2011
We review historic occurrences in Mexico of one of the least known Xenarthra of Mesoamerica – the northern naked-tailed armadillo (Cabassous centralis Miller, 1899).

Evolutionary Implications of Dental Eruption in Dasypus (Xenarthra)

open access: yesJournal of Mammalian Evolution, 2011
Late eruption of the permanent dentition was recently proposed as a shared anatomical feature of endemic African mammals (Afrotheria), with anecdotal reports indicating that it is also present in dasypodids (armadillos). In order to clarify this question, and address the possiblity that late eruption is shared by afrotherians and dasypodids, we ...

Chromosome painting in three-toed sloths: a cytogenetic signature and ancestral karyotype for Xenarthra

open access: yesBMC Evolutionary Biology, 2012
Background Xenarthra (sloths, armadillos and anteaters) represent one of four currently recognized Eutherian mammal supraorders. Some phylogenomic studies point to the possibility of Xenarthra being at the base of the Eutherian tree, together or not with

Molecular decay of the tooth gene Enamelin (ENAM) mirrors the loss of enamel in the fossil record of placental mammals. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS Genetics, 2009
Vestigial structures occur at both the anatomical and molecular levels, but studies documenting the co-occurrence of morphological degeneration in the fossil record and molecular decay in the genome are rare.

Resolution among major placental mammal interordinal relationships with genome data imply that speciation influenced their earliest radiations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Background: A number of the deeper divergences in the placental mammal tree are still inconclusively resolved despite extensive phylogenomic analyses.

How is the third jaw joint in whales different? Diverse modes of articulation between the jaws of whales

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, Volume 247, Issue 6, Page 1224-1240, December 2025.
This study conducts the first comprehensive morphological investigation of the mandibular symphysis in whales. Using gross anatomical observation and CT cross‐sectional data, we describe diverse joint morphologies across 74 extant and fossil cetacean taxa. Toothed whales exhibit unfused, partially fused, or fully fused symphyses.

Some natural history notes on Paraguayan armadillos (Xenarthra, Chlamyphoridae) Tolypeutes matacus and Euphractus sexcinctus

open access: yesXenarthra
We report on some novel natural history observations of southern three-banded armadillo Tolypeutes matacus and six-banded armadillo Euphractus sexcinctus from Paraguay. These are: 1) a new band anomaly for an adult of T.

Macrochorobates scalabrinii (Moreno & Mercerat) (Cingulata, dasypodidae) in the late miocene of the San Juan province (Argentina). Biochronostratigraphical and palaeobiogeographical implications [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Macrochorobates scalabrinii is reported and described. The remains come from the upper deposits of the Las Flores Formation (Upper Miocene), outcropping at the Iglesia Valley (Iglesia Department, San Juan Province, Argentina). The detailed study of these

Genomic Signatures in Maned Three‐Toed Sloths From Ancient to Recent Environmental Changes in Brazil's Threatened Atlantic Forest

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 34, Issue 23, December 2025.
ABSTRACT Environmental and climatic changes have shaped the evolutionary trajectories of natural populations, leaving genomic signatures that reflect how species respond to these shifts and their impacts on genetic health. While these insights are essential for unravelling evolutionary histories and informing conservation strategies, studies on ...

Structural abnormalities in Paraguayan southern three-banded armadillos Tolypeutes matacus (Chlamyphoridae)

open access: yesXenarthra
Two structural abnormalities are reported in southern three-banded armadillos Tolypeutes matacus (Chlamyphoridae) from Paraguay. Additional reports of individuals with amputated legs are noted, and a potential explanation for the frequency of such ...
