Oxidation States of Fe in Constituent Minerals of a Spinel Lherzolite Xenolith from the Tariat Depression, Mongolia: The Significance of Fe3+ in Olivine [PDF]
The oxidation states of Fe within olivine, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, and spinel in a spinel lherzolite xenolith from the Tariat Depression, Mongolia were investigated using 57Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy to evaluate the redox condition of the upper ...

The composition of the continental lower crust is not well known. High seismic wave speeds may indicate mafic or garnet‐bearing material, with implications for emplacement history, evolution, and rheological and dynamic behavior. In this contribution, we

Carbonate- and silicate-metasomatized mantle beneath Himalayan-Tibetan orogenic belt [PDF]
The extreme geochemical enrichment of post-collisional potassium-rich lava in the Alpine-Himalayan orogenic belt has led researchers to hypothesize that enrichment is inherited from a metasomatized mantle source potentially incorporating crustal ...

Explores the behavior of carbon in minerals, melts, and fluids under extreme conditions
Carbon trapped in diamonds and carbonate-bearing rocks in subduction zones are examples of the continuing exchange of substantial carbon ...

Protracted late Paleozoic volcanic arc activity along the Northeast Asian continental margin [PDF]
Northeast Asia is a complex tectonic collage bounded by Paleozoic–Mesozoic internal and peripheral orogens, whose distribution and continuity are obscured by later deformation and magmatic overprinting.

Cold deep subduction recorded by remnants of a Paleoproterozoic carbonated slab [PDF]
The onset of modern-style plate tectonics remains under debate. Here, Xu et al. report a cold thermal-gradient recorded in an eclogite xenolith in Paleoproterozoic carbonatite from orogen, and propose that modern-style subduction has operated since at ...

Abiotic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons originating from the sub-oceanic mantle [PDF]
Experimental studies have demonstrated that petroleum may form from abiotic organic compounds synthesised in the Earth’s upper mantle. However, the most direct evidence of mantle-derived organics, as obtained from whole-rock analyses, indicates ambiguous

Exploring the links between Large Igneous Provinces and dramatic environmental impact
An emerging consensus suggests that Large Igneous Provinces (LIPs) and Silicic LIPs (SLIPs) are a significant driver of dramatic global environmental and biological changes, including mass extinctions.

Geodynamic implications of xenolith geotherms
Studies of xenolith suites yield depth‐temperature arrays for the lithosphere at the time of eruption. These studies constrain the conductive heat flow through the lithosphere and limit the temperature range across the rheological boundary layer to <300 K. Numerical models of convection illustrate features that may be found within suites of samples.
