Surgical treatment of xerophthalmia
The Laryngoscope, 1973AbstractDuring the past year, two patients suffering from xerophthalmia were treated by transposition of Stensen's duct into the inferior conjunctival fornix. The case history of one patient is reviewed and the operative technique as well as a modification which allows for a simultaneous reconstruction of an obliterated fornix are described.

Xerophthalmia results from an insufficient supply of vitamin A to the eye. Primary signs of xerophthalmia are conjunctival xerosis, Bitôt's spots with conjunctival xerosis, corneal xerosis, corneal ulceration with xerosis, keratomalacia. Secondary signs of xerophthalmia are night blindness, xerophthalmia fundus and corneal scars.

Xerophthalmia and Keratomalacia
1996Abstract Xerophthalmia (xeros, dry; ophthalmia, inflamed eye) is a constellation of ocular manifestations long associated with vitamin A deficiency, representing the “classical” presentation and (with rare exceptions) pathognomonic signs and symptoms of this particular form of malnutrition.

In Reply. —Keratomalacia in the absence of conjunctival xerosis from sudden deterioration of vitamin A status was indeed reported by McLaren et al 1 in 1966, as referenced in my article. Their report was certainly not the first. Similar cases were reported by Stephenson 2 in 1910 and by Blegvad 3 in 1924.
