Population structure of Atlantic swordfish (Xiphias gladius L. 1758) (Teleostea, Xiphiidae) using mitochondrial DNA analysis: implications for fisheries management [PDF]

open access: yesAnimal Biodiversity and Conservation, 2011
Recent studies on Atlantic swordfish (Xiphias gladius L. 1758) genetic structure have demonstrated significant heterogeneity but the precise boundary between populations remains to be identified. In this context, genetic diversity was investigated by PCR–

Portuguese commercial fisheries of swordfish, Xiphias gladius

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2014
Swordfish has an important role in Portuguese fisheries. Portuguese commercial swordfish landings were analyzed from 1986 to 2012. Commercial landings of five incidental catches of pelagic sharks (Alopias superciliosus, Alopias vulpinus, Isurus oxyrinchus, Prionace glauca and Sphryna zygaena) were also evaluated for the same period.

Histochemical characterisation of oocytes of the swordfish Xiphias gladius

open access: yesScientia Marina, 2008
This paper reports a histological, histochemical and immunohistochemical characterisation of growing oocytes of the swordfish Xiphias gladius. The presence and distribution of carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, calcium, iron, vitellogenin/Vg, zona radiata protein/Zrp, metallothionein/Mt, and thyroid hormones/T3-T4 were studied during oogenesis (cortical ...

First Metataxonomic Characterisation of Gut Microbiota of Swordfish (Xiphias gladius). [PDF]

open access: yesEnviron Microbiol Rep
This is the first metataxonomic characterisation of gut microbiota of swordfish using next‐generation sequencing. Findings show significant differences in the alpha diversity among the weight categories and the FAO fishing areas. The phylum Pseudomonadota dominated the swordfish gut microbiota, followed by Fusobacteriota. Photobacterium resulted in the

Almost billfish: convergent longirostry, micro-dentition, and possible glandular sinuses in a large teleost fish from the Upper Cretaceous of Northern Italy. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Anat
A fossil rostrum fragment of a large teleost fish from the Upper Cretaceous of Northern Italy reveals remarkable anatomical convergences with Cenozoic and Recent billfishes (marlins, swordfishes, and akin). The extinct group Plethodidae independently acquired a long snout, micro‐teeth, and oil‐gland sinuses well before the evolution of true billfishes.

Brain Morphology and Quantitative Assessment of Sensory Brain Areas in Southern Bluefin Tuna, Thunnus maccoyii (Scombridae, Teleostei). [PDF]

open access: yesJ Comp Neurol
The absolute and relative volume of major sensory and integrative brain regions of the southern bluefin tuna Thunnus maccoyii are examined using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A dominant cerebellum projects into the midbrain ventricular space, while the optic tectum represents a smaller proportion of total brain volume than previously estimated ...

FAUNA ICTICA ASOCIADA A LA PESQUERIA DE PEZ ESPADA (XIPHIAS GLADIUS LINNAEUS) FISHES ASSOCIATED WITH THE FISHERY OF SWORDFISH (XIPHIAS GLADIUS LINNAEUS)

open access: yesGayana, 2002

Metazoan Parasites Infecting Xiphias gladius from the Eastern Coast of Algeria (SW Mediterranean Sea)

open access: yesZoodiversity, 2021
Five specimens of Xiphias gladius Linnaeus, 1758 were sampled from the eastern coast of Algeria and examined for their metazoan parasites. Pathological effects of the collected parasites were examined for the whole body of X. gladius.

Environmental and human factors shape the trophic ecology of a widespread marine predator. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Anim Ecol
Our study reveals how environmental factors and fishing pressure influence swordfish diet, highlighting trophic shifts under future climate scenarios. We provide a novel framework to strengthen our ability to plan for and manage the redistribution of species under global change ensuring that the energetic needs of predators are met.
