Transmission of the hop strain of arabis mosaic virus by Xiphinema diversicaudatum*

SUMMARYHop plants became infected with the hop strain of arabis mosaic virus (AMV(H)) when grown in hopfield and woodland soil in which infected plants had been growing. Infection occurred in soil infested with the dagger nematode Xiphinema diversicaudatum, but neither in uninfested soil nor in soil previously heated to kill nematodes.

The life cycles of X. diversicaudatum and X. index were compared under two temperature regimes. For both species under both temperature regimes, peak egg laying occurred during the summer months. Total populations reached their maximum in autumn and their lowest point in spring. Temperature affected the time of onset of egg production in X.

In the plant parasitic nematodes Longidorus leptocephalus (Hooper) and Xiphinema diversicaudatum (Micoletzky) the long spear has two parts, the odontostyle and the odontophore. The odontophore is a modification of the anterior oesophagus and contains three sinuses which lie parallel to and around the food canal.
