Failure Mechanisms in XLPE Cables

2021
During the operation of the cables, their insulation is subjected to simultaneous or consecutive electrical, thermal, mechanical and environmental stresses. These stresses contribute to the initiation and development of some processes of XLPE degradation; processes that lead, in time, to the insulation breakdown and, therefore, to the removal and ...

Electroluminescence for XLPE cable diagnosis

Proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Properties and Applications of Dielectric Materials (Cat. No.03CH37417), 2004
Electrical treeing is responsible for the breakdown of power cables with polymeric insulation, such as low density polyethylene (LDPE) and cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE). Electroluminescence (EL) occurs in the initiation phase of electrical tree. We studied the characteristics of EL in XLPE cut from 77 kV class power cables.

Deterioration in aged XLPE cables

[Proceedings] 1992 Annual Report: Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena, 2003
Electrical and material characteristics of 93 aged XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene) cables removed from the field after 2 approximately 19 years of service were measured. It was confirmed that breakdown strengths under AC, DC, and impulse voltages in such cables decrease with length of service.

Water measurements in XLPE cables

Conference on Electrical Insulation & Dielectric Phenomena - Annual Report 1985, 1985
The water content in buried high-voltage cables is of great industrial interest, especially in view of the treeing observed in crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) cables in the presence of water (1–3). It is not yet clear, however, if a minimum water content exists above which tree growth is initiated. Although the saturated-water content of PE is about 10–
