XML-based XML schema access [PDF]
XML Schema's abstract data model consists of components, which are the structures that eventually define a schema as a whole. XML Schema's XML syntax, on the other hand, is not a direct representation of the schema components, and it proves to be surprisingly hard to derive a schema's components from the XML syntax. The Schema Component XML Syntax (SCX)

XML documents are used to exchange data. Data exchange implies the transformation of the original data to a different structure. Often such transformations need to be adapted to some specific situation, like the rendering to non-standard platforms for display or the support of special user preferences.

In order to capture the dynamics of XML databases a general model of tree-based database transformations is required. In this paper such an abstract computational model is presented, which brings together ideas from Abstract State Machines and monadic second-order logic. The model captures all XML database transformations.
