Influence of the Ethanol Lure and Concentration on Captures of Ambrosia Beetles in Tree Fruits and Ornamentals

open access: yesJournal of Applied Entomology, Volume 149, Issue 1, Page 74-87, February 2025.
ABSTRACT Xylosandrus crassiusculus (Motschulsky) and Xylosandrus germanus (Blandford) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) are major ambrosia beetle pests in tree nut and fruit orchards and ornamental nurseries in the eastern United States (USA).

The Essential Role of Taxonomic Expertise in the Creation of DNA Databases for the Identification and Delimitation of Southeast Asian Ambrosia Beetle Species (Curculionidae: Scolytinae: Xyleborini)

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution, 2020
DNA holds great potential for species identification and efforts to create a DNA database of all animals and plants currently contains >7.5 million sequences representing ~300,000 species.

Acoustic communication in bark beetles (Scolytinae): 150 years of research

open access: yesPhysiological Entomology, Volume 49, Issue 4, Page 281-300, December 2024.
We review publications spanning 153 years of research on bark beetle bioacoustics—we summarize existing knowledge, identify gaps and propose avenues for future research in this field. At least five sound production mechanisms have been reported across 125 examined species of bark beetles, with elytro‐tergal, gular‐prosternal and vertex‐pronotum ...

Effect of the host plant on the life history, behaviour and fungal community of a fungus‐farming ambrosia beetle

open access: yesEcological Entomology, Volume 49, Issue 5, Page 705-718, October 2024.
We analysed the life history, behaviour and symbionts of Xyleborinus saxesenii in different host trees. The life history traits, behaviour and nutritional symbionts were not impacted by the host tree, but other fungal symbionts were. Our results show that wood‐dwelling insects do not always adapt to the locally abundant plants.

Early impact assessment of the paninvasive polyphagous shot hole borer beetle on commercial pear production

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, Volume 172, Issue 9, Page 796-805, September 2024.
The paninvasive polyphagous shot hole borer (PSHB) beetle, Euwallacea fornicatus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), and its fungal symbiont Fusarium euwallaceae were detected for the first time in commercial deciduous fruit orchards, where the impact on industry is currently unknown.
