Impacts of temperature and rootstocks on tomato grafting success rates [PDF]
Numerous studies have highlighted the merits of grafting to improve the performance of vegetable crops. However, the technique is hindered by several obstacles, including the synchronization of seedlings used as scions and rootstocks, and the effects of ...

Studying in vivo dynamics of xylem-transported 11CO2 using positron emission tomography [PDF]
Respired CO2 in woody tissues can build up in the xylem and dissolve in the sap solution to be transported through the plant. From the sap, a fraction of the CO2 can either be radially diffuse to the atmosphere or be assimilated in chloroplasts present ...

Elevated temperature and CO2 concentration effects on xylem anatomy of Scots pine [PDF]
We studied the effects of elevated temperature and carbon dioxide concentration ([CO(2)]) alone and together on wood anatomy of 20-year-old Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) trees. The study was conducted in 16 closed chambers, providing a factorial combination of two temperature regimes and two CO(2) concentrations (ambient and elevated), with four ...

Root xylem anatomy of the wild and cultivated sunflower.
The root functionality is affected by numerous factors. One of the main structural parameters, the most important for functionality and adaptability, is xylem organization. Taking into account that sunflower root features have not been directly selected in breeding programs the aim of this research is to determine whether different sunflower genotypes (

Trade-offs Between Water Transport Capacity and Drought Resistance in Neotropical Canopy Liana and Tree Species [PDF]
In tropical forest canopies, it is critical for upper shoots to efficiently provide water to leaves for physiological function while safely preventing loss of hydraulic conductivity due to cavitation during periods of soil water deficit or high ...

Stem hydraulic capacitance decreases with drought stress : implications for modelling tree hydraulics in the Mediterranean oak Quercus ilex [PDF]
Hydraulic modelling is a primary tool to predict plant performance in future drier scenarios. However, as most tree models are validated under non-stress conditions they may fail when water becomes limiting.

Listening to ultrasound from plants reveals xylem vessel anatomy
Abstract Plants emit ultrasound pulses under drought stress, which originate in their water-carrying xylem vessels, and can be recorded externally. We demonstrate that these ultrasound pulses consist of superposed damped oscillations at plant-specific frequencies in the range of 10 – 150 kHz, that are correlated to xylem dimensions.

Plant water resource partitioning and isotopic fractionation during transpiration in a seasonally dry tropical climate [PDF]
Lake Chala (3 degrees 19' S, 37 degrees 42' E) is a steep-sided crater lake situated in equatorial East Africa, a tropical semiarid area with a bimodal rainfall pattern. Plants in this region are exposed to a prolonged dry season, and we investigated if (
