Task allocation and reproductive skew in social mass provisioning carpenter bees in relation to age and size [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
The mass provisioning carpenter bees comprise two tribes, the Xylocopini and the Ceratinini. Although social nesting occurs in both tribes, no morphological castes have evolved and females are totipotent, which makes the tribe as a whole highly ...

Richness of Wild Bees (Hymenoptera: Apidae) in a Forest Remnant in a Transition Region of Eastern Amazonia

open access: yesPsyche: A Journal of Entomology, Volume 2019, Issue 1, 2019., 2019
Eastern Amazonia is an area with great biological diversity that has suffered rapid deforestation and forest fragmentation over the years. Because of the scarcity of data on the fauna and flora, the northwest of the state of Maranhão has become a priority area for studies that seek to gain a better understanding of bee fauna.

Buzzing Wild Bee Visits Enhance Seed Set in Eggplant, Solanum melongena

open access: yesPsyche: A Journal of Entomology, Volume 2017, Issue 1, 2017., 2017
Sixty percent of the angiosperms with poricidal anthers are buzz‐pollinated by bees (Hymenoptera: Apoidea: Apiformes). Plant taxa with Solanum‐type flowers have larger anthers and shorter filaments. Solanum melongena (Solanaceae) is more commonly and efficiently pollinated by buzz pollinators. The present study documented bees and their diurnal pattern

[Retracted] Climatic, Regional Land‐Use Intensity, Landscape, and Local Variables Predicting Best the Occurrence and Distribution of Bee Community Diversity in Various Farmland Habitats in Uganda

open access: yesPsyche: A Journal of Entomology, Volume 2013, Issue 1, 2013., 2013
This study was conducted in 2006 in central Uganda to provide baseline data on relationships between bee community variables and local, climatic, landscape and regional drivers affecting bee community abundance and diversity in agricultural landscapes. Bee abundance and species richness increased significantly (P < 0.05) with increase in percent cover ...

Large Carpenter Bees as Agricultural Pollinators

open access: yesPsyche: A Journal of Entomology, Volume 2010, Issue 1, 2010., 2010
Large carpenter bees (genus Xylocopa) are wood‐nesting generalist pollinators of broad geographical distribution that exhibit varying levels of sociality. Their foraging is characterized by a wide range of food plants, long season of activity, tolerance of high temperatures, and activity under low illumination levels.

Tests of reproductive-skew models in social insects. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Reproductive-skew theory can be broadly divided into transactional models, in which reproduction is shared among group members in return for some fitness benefit, and tug-of-war models, in which reproductive sharing arises solely from an inability of ...
